They could finally celebrate, as they are, for the second year in a row, the World Trials Champions. The 1994 . World Championship is only the second for the Gerena, Spain-based manufacturer, but an incredible sixth for Tarres. Though they were able to celebrate the championship, they were unable to celebrate it as they would have preferred to - with a victory. Even though a win was unnecessary, Tarres and his team went at it as though it was; as though their lives depended on it. (Below)The victory there went to local favorite Diego Bosls; It was the Italian's first win of the season. • IS As always, Tarres came out swinging, and was in contention for the win until the second-to-last section, where only the severe scoring of the observer who burdened Tarres with a questionable five, impeded his climbing to the top step of the podium. According to witnesses, the father of Diego Bosis had notified the observers of the Motor Club Bergamo. (of which Bosis is a member), that Tarres was leading and would need a five in the final section to secure a victory for home-favorite Bosis. This was the penalty Tarres was saddled with, and victory was handed to Bosis. "Today, the observers were overly strict, almost unjust in some sections," said Tarres. "But I don't want to think about that now, I want to savor my sixth world title." The prologue Saturday was, as always, where the riders got their first taste of the sections, and in this case the severity of the scoring by the observers. The sections appeared cleanable, but with the observers being so inflexible, it was not to be. The first rider to feel the heat was young Spania rd Gabriel Reyes, who warned his fellow countrymen about the stiff scoring. Tarres was the only rider not to score a five on the opening lap. His score of five points was spread ou t over three sections. Right behind Tarres was a very su rp rising Bosis with seven. Bosis was riding 'on his home turf, and had competed at many Italian Nationals in the same area. Next, was a renewed Angel Garcia with eight, followed by Dougie Lampkin with nine. The easy sections failed to separate the top men, only "stupid mistakes" condemned riders like Marc Colomer (14), Ahvala (15) and Bilbao (20). Only one wayward foot kept Joan Pons from a clean second lap on Sunday morning. His amazing one-point lap (after a 14 on Saturday) allowed him to close the gap on the leaders. Tarres (15), Bosis (12) and Lampkin (15) came up with their cards loaded up with points. Only Miglio (5) and Ahvala (9) were able to keep it under 10. After two laps, it stood: Pons (15), Miglio (16), Bosis (19), Tarres (20), Ahvala (24) and lampkin (24). Colomer crashed on the loop between sections three and four, and was forced to retire. The final la p was very exciting as Bosis and Tarres had overtaken the rest and approached the final sections separated by only a few points. Tarres held a very slim lead. It was here tha t the trial was decided by the unexpected five given to Tarres. Lampkin turned in a two-point loop for the best score of the trial and ended the
