FAX (310) 427-6685 INJHEWIND Continued from page 3 Abe to join Team Roberts in En land (SHOEI) ~ lot~ 1:Jif J N' apanese road racing phenom No rifumi Abe (ri gh t) will replace the inju red Daryl Beattie on th e Marlboro Roberts Ya m aha YZR500, beg inn in g w ith th e Bri tish Grand Prix at Donin gton Park on Ju ly 31. The 18-year -old was the revelation of the Japanese 500cc GP earlier in the year when he co ntes ted the lead with Lucky Strike Suzuki's Kevin Schwantz and H RC's M ichael Doohan in h is ver y first Grand Prix . Abe eventually cra shed out of the race w hile sitting in second pl ace. Abe will rep lace Beattie, who crashed on the very first lap of practice for the French GP at Le Man s on Friday, Ju ly 15, and lost all of the toes on his left foot. Beattie underwent su rgery in France and is expected to return to action for the Czechoslovakian GP on August 21. At that point, it appea rs likely that Abe would then m ove to Wayne Rainey's 250cc GP team if Kenny Roberts Jr. is still recovering from his brok en arm. "I never made an offer to Abe except for next year," Rainey sa id at Le Mans. "When I first talked to him, he said he was w ith Honda and I respec ted his loyalty .) asked hi m abo u t a colla boration for next year. If he agreed, that would have been a contract just between me and him - wi th nobody like Yam aha, Marlboro or Kenny Roberts inv olved . It would have been my job to find sponsors and bikes for h im . We don't expect t90 much. We just want him to learn how a Yamaha 500 feels. Europe and the European GP business will be new to him, and w e'll try to keep that all off - just let him rid e the bike. If Da ryl is back in Czecho and KR Jr. is no t, I w~l put Abe on Kenny Junior's 250." th e International Six Days End uro this Sep tember. According to ou r m ost current information, there are 417 foreign entries, 160 American rider s who preen tered by paying $500, and the AMA 's "Top 50" lis t of riders who performed we ll in the recently completed National Reliability Enduro Series. Some of the riders in th e la tt er tw o grou ps n o doubt o verlap, tho ugh w e still don't know which ones. It is also uncl ear which riders (if any) would be moved up in the event of such overlaps. According to Ve rn Street of the event-hosting Tulsa Trailriders, the order of priority for being entered Eastern Office 4188 First Ave., Tucker, GA, 30084; mailing address P.O. Box 805, Tucker, GA 30085-0805. (404)934-7850. FAX (404)934-3112 in th e Six Days is, in order: Th e "preen tered 160" list; the foreign list; and the AMA "To p-50" list. That makes for a total of 627 rid ers, or 27 more th an the 600 limi t. "If there ar e still rider slots available, the Tulsa Trailriders wa nt to make available slots for as man y foreign ride rs as possible," said Street. (Foreign requests ares s till coming in.) If this is true, it might mean that the "Top-SO" list would have to shrink by 27, thus becoming the "Top-23" list.
