S Ward returns to two wheels F ormer factory Kawasaki rider Jeff Ward (above) recently made a return to twowheeled off-road racing. But this time, there was no motor powering his knobbies. Since retiring from motocross in 1992, the 33-year-old has spent much of his time on four wheels, racing Indy Lights cars and stadium off-road trucks. Ward, however, returned to two wheels at the July 9 Mammoth Mountain Kamikaze Downhill National, held in Mammoth Lakes, California, as a guest member of the factory Yeti Cycles team . "A few weeks before the race, I had mentioned to Troy Lee that I was thinking about going up and racing my own bike in one of the sportsman classes," said Ward. "But the next thing I knew, Troy had talked to John Parker of Yeti and arranged for a full-on team ride. Then I found ou t that Parker had entered me in the Pro/Elite class, and that was a bit of a surprise." Surprised or not, Ward raced down the mountain in five minutes flat aboard his fully-suspended bicycle and scored a very impressive 20th overall out of a field of 160 riders. The former 125, 250 and 500cc National MX Champion and Supercross Champion was clocked at 54.9 mph in the fastest section of the 'cou rse, and his performance in the National qualified him for the subsequent World Cup round. In his second run down the mountain, Ward turned in a time of 5:07, good enough for 28th. "I didn't expect to do so well, and I had no idea that I might qualify for the World Cup," said Ward. "I was still sucking wind when I had to go up for my second run. I wasn't in mountain biking shape, especially at that altitude. I think I could hav e done even better, had I prepared and had a good set of legs under me." Though Ward has a promising future ahead of him in auto racing, the Californian admits that downhill mountain bike racing has captured his interest. "It was a lot of fun . 1felt fast and had a great time," said Ward. "I would definitely like to do another." Other motocrossers who turned in notable performances were 1990 Western Regional 125cc Supercross Champion Ty Davis and. multi-time Women's National Champion, Mercedes Gonzales. Davis piloted a factory backed, full-suspension Foes Fabrication bicycle, and captured the Expert class win with a time of 5:14. Gonzales was the Women's Beginner class winner with a 5:55 run aboard her own rigid bicycle. necessities. Mot o Liber ty will transport the machin e from track to tr ack.
