Mayer, Babka hot at 1-96 ITIST By Grace DiBenedetto LAKE ODESSA, MI,JULY2 Dean Maye r doubled his pleasure and doubled his fun when he pu t the 1-96's TI course to the test and ea rned w ins in the 30+ and 500cc Open class TIs. Mean whi le, local favorite Tim Babka showed Nicky Hayden sho rt track racing Michigan -style as the two traded the advantage two ti mes a lap in the 500cc A class at the 1-96 TI/ short track. During the TI portion of the event, Mayer negotiated the 18Q-degree switchback hugging the ma rker hay ba les on his TI SOO Yamaha to keep an edge on the competition. Maye r took a back sea t in the heats, testing out lines and p lanning his s tra tegy for the fina l, knowing tha t a go od p ost position was only seco nd in impor tan ce to a good plan of attac k. On ce Maye r squeezed past race leader Cory Clare on lap two of the main , he opened a couple lengt hs on the field, leav ing heat race winners Jim Bolenbaugh and Ch ad Davis to finish second and th ird, res pectively. Mayer saved his bes t moves for the Veteran final as he narrowly du cked un der Bill Phare in the last switchback and charged to the Larry Schmi d checkered flag, bestin g Phare by only inches . The Hayden/Babka duel in the 500cc A short track final was an intense one. Each time H<\lYden wou ld take the advantage from high on the outside, Babka would d ive down low and grab the lead right back. The only thing to stop the trading of places was the wav ing of the checkered flag. Babka took the win. Babka 's o lder b rothe r Mike would not be de nied his mo ment in the spotligh t as he captured the win in the 30+ sho rt track main after holding off a determ ined Joe McCormic k to the wi re.
