ME, JULY 2 Danny Pepoon, last year's NEMA Grand Champion, and Shane O'Conno r ran away with wins in their respective Advanced classes during NEMA's 10th anniversary race at the Spring HiU MX track. Pepoon a nd h is Suzuki b las ted to th e fron t of the 85« pack with the holeshot, foll owed by Keith Pa rt ridge, who beat h im in the 105e( Open dass. By the . th ird la p , Pe po o n a nd Partridge had separated th e m selves by nearly a qua rter of a lap fro m the b a t tl e for third between Jess Little and Shawn Lavoie. On the la s t lap, Partridge fell off t he b li s te r i n g pace Pe poo n mainta ined t h ro ughout the ra ce but s till held on to second. Fro m the drop of the gate in 125a: action, O'Connor, on OJ. Suzuki, was in comm and of the race, firing into tum one for the holesh ot wi th Ouis Findley on his rear tire . Ray Fros t. last out of the gates, exp loded through the pack in tum one to take the third p osi tion behind Findley . like a rerun of the p revio us 125cx mato, O' Con nor th rottled out front w ith a huge lea d and rod e a tigh t, technical race to finish first. Fros t p ressured Findley for the first three lap s, but dropped off the pace knowing that a third-place finish in the second moto would put him second in overall points for the dass. In the earlier 125cx moto, Frost had fin ;;,hed second to O'Connor, dominating Findley throughout the race. Aaron Stevenson rode h is vi n tage Kawasaki KZ750 to finish well out in front of the competition in both the Vintage 5 and Vintage 6 classes in the WERA Vintage even t a t North Carolina Motor 5pet:d way . Stevenson, turning times in the one-minu te, five-second range, eas ily domin ated both eve nts, winning eac h b y ne arly h alf a lap over Sean Dwyer and his Wood- Rotax 600. Stevenson, who rides a Ho nda CBR6OOF2 in the modem races, said tha t he can actua lly go faster on the KZ750. " I couldn 't get below 1:06s with the F2," said Slt."Venson, "The front tucked on me twice at that pace." Stevenson's KZ750, which first saw the race track as a privateer superbike in 1981, has seen extensive modification. Satu rday's other vinta ge even ts provided doser racing. Gary Smith, ridin g a Honda 350, was the surprise winner in Vintage 1. The newcerner to the WERA vintage scene passed earl y leade r Rixon Brec:kon and then got by William Mu rar to take the win. Murar was able to hold off Breckon, and they finished in that orde r. The Vintage 2 event saw Breckon out in fron t early, but bad lu ck struck when his Triu mp h los t a cylinder, forcing him out The battle for second became the battle for first as Bruce Allen, 1993 National Otampion, and 60-year-old Ted Hut>bard fought each other the entire race. When the dust settled, Allen had beaten Hubbard to the line, with Jerry Harman filling out the podium in th ird . In Vintage 3 action , the favored Rob Tului e jumped the sta rt on his Norton 750 and was blu e-fla gged . The time tha t Tu luie lost on his stop-an d-go penalty gave Michael Eiland the ad vantage and he took the win on his Yamaha 750. JULY 1 Yamaha pilot Jacob Eissle r blazed to his firsteve r Pee Wee main event win at round two of Cydela nd's Summer Supereross High Poi n t Series. Th e night's Pee W ee act ion got underway with heat race number one. Bradley Powell led the charge off the line and into the first tu m. Hot on his heels were Bobby Barnes, Darren Nye, Eissler, an d Mark Cavalie. By the second lap, Powell had pulled ou t a li tt le d istance ov er Barnes who w as coming under pressure from Nye. As the white flag waved , Pow ell moved ou t front. followed by Barnes , Nye, Eissler and Jeremy Pa rks, who had push ed his wa y pa st Cava lie into fifth. With less than a lap remaining bo th Nye and Parks made charges to move up, but a t the finish it w as Powell, foll owed by Barnes, Nve, Eissler, and Parks. As the' gate dropped for the main, it was hot starter Powell out front, with Barn es, Eiss ler, Parks and Nye in pursuit. As they exi ted the wh oops, Powell and Barnes cam e together over a ju mp. with both riders going down. Eissle r, Pa rk s. a nd Nye all got b y before Ba rnes got go ing ag ain. with .Po we ll rejo in in g near the back. Up front , Eissler turned up the heat and the ra ce came d o wn to a two ~man batt le be tween Eissler and Pa rks. By t he midway point, Barnes, wh o had recovered from his firstlap crash, had wo rked his way pas t Cav alie and Nye into third b ut was a lon g way behind the leaders. Joe Elling ton rode his FMF/ Answer / Arkport Cycle Sa les-spons ore d Suzuki to a n ex citing first-place finish in the second mota to take the overall win in the 125cc Expert class at Silversp rings MX. In the first moto, Ben Dressner took. the hol eshot and nev er looked ba ck with a 15sec ond lead. With a bad sta rt, Ellington had worked h is way up through th e p ack, but couldn 't catch Dressner a n d fin ished second. Isaacs flies at Howard Lake Vintage HalfMile By Tim McBride HOWARD LAKE. MN,JUNE 26 Johnny Isaacs took top honors in the 7SOcc Pro Twi n class a board hi s TPR Tri u mph when Omar's Gop her Racing hosted its first Vintage ' Dirt Track Riders Association Nat ional event of, the season at the Wright Co unty Fairgro unds half-mile dirt oval. Isaacs jum ped in to the lead at the start of the 750cc Pro main eve nt and held a small margin over John Fike while Tom Laird and Mark_ Robi nson gave chase . The race w as a carbon . copy of th e hea t race for Isaa cs an d Fik e, as they br oke away from the rest of the field and finis hed 1-2. After a dose dice wi th Lai rd, Robinson bettered his heat race performance as he slipped by Laird at mid-race to take third place. In 750cc Amateur action. Steve Hill was out front at th e sta rt of th e main a head of James Eastlee, Mickey Hutcheson, Mike Zbrozek and John Daniels. As the lead gro up paraded the circuit in single file, the attention shifted to the bat tie for sixth, featuring Rone Stone, Frank Radloff and Joe Blackwell. The three riders were racing for the pos ition as if it we re for the lead. Hill went on to score the win, as the top five finishing order stayed the sa me . Blackw ell rumb led past Radloff on lap tw o then d ispatched Stone on the next go around to lay claim to sixth p lace. The action warmed u p wh en the Vintage Single dass came to the line. After the start, race lead er Mar k Robinson was bus y fend ing off a hard-<:harging Tim Gregory un til the penultimat e lap when Gregory finally mad e the pass . As the two rid ers hashed it out, Easllee had the best sea t in the house wh ile running in th ird . Rob inson answered ba cle, th ough, as he p er· formed a textbook draft pass ot the wine to steal back the lead and the win ov er a bewildered Gregory.
