:: MOTOCROSS:. :: ' :· · .:.-,~; _ Perris Raceway. .GFUTeam GreenIFMFc YouthWodd Championships' : S imp's all business the impound areas thei r fathers would carry them on their shoulders to the start ing area where the race was d elayed un til their arrival. Nihan was faster than Collier in both motos but neither boy could match the speed of double-moto winner Darryl Ecklund. ~ Perris Raceway Perris, California Results: July 10, 1994 (Left) Jonathan Shimp won two class championships by winning both of his t1e-breaklng sscond motos. (Above) sean Coll ier (63) fended off the charges of Chris Nlhan (32) for the 50cc Super Stock Expert class win. By Tony Alessi PERRIS, CA,jULY 10 onathan Shimp may not have won every moto in which he competed , but the heats that he did top we re definitely the right ones. The 11-yearold racked up wins in the 60cc (9-11) Stock and Modified classes during th e second annual GFI/Team Green/FMF Youth World Championships, held at Goat Breker' s Perris Raceway. -This year's event saw more than double the number of entrants fro m las t year's event, w ith most of the 398 entrants coming from the western United States. Wa rm , dry w eather he lped keep all 48 motos running on schedule, and at the day's end, numerous products from FMF, Axo, Bell, PJ1, Pro Circuit, Powerbar, White Bros. and Dunlop were awarded during the trophy presentation ceremony. Kawasaki Team Green's Jeff Ward and "Fireho se" Dave Lombard staffed the Team Green Support Unit, which was on hand to assist ri d ers w ith mechanical repa irs and setu p ad vice. Longtime rivals since the ir days in the Pee Wee classes, Shimp and Christopher Tocco banged bars all da y long in the 60cc classes. In the past, Shimp has always seemed to have the upper hand, but at this event, Tocco seemed to ha ve kicked it up a notch. Tocco ran with, or in front of, Shimp during each moto. "Jona thon has been injured for most of this year," explained Shimp's father, Erick. "He broke his wrist in September, J 42 his forearm in December, his collarbone . in March, and had a compression fracture to his right tibia in April. " Shimp put all of his injuri es behind h im when the gate dropped for the opening 60cc (9-11) Stock Open class moto. Armed with his "secret" thirdgear starting technique, Shimp rocketed into the lead, while Tocco was mired mid-pack. "I m issed thi rd gear," said Tocco. Shimp looked good .in th e first few turns, but d idn't appear to be pulling away. Tocco, on the other had, was on fire and moved through the pack with ease . Before long, Tocco was secon d behind Shimp. Just as the two rid er s began to battle for the lead, Shimp became cross-rutted in a d eep ru t and fell over. Tocco picked up the lead and rode unchallenged to the eventual wi n . Shimp was slow to remount, but once underway, methodically moved through the field to fin ish second in front of Kyle Mace, the novice class winner. Mace 's stro ng performance, however, w as m arred when a tech ins p ect o r found holes drilled in his airbox . Mace was promptly disqualified. Dylan Lord regrouped after falling in the mud to finish third in the Open class, ah ead of Ross Garcia . The second moto saw another Shimp ho leshot, but this time, Tocco was glued to his tail. The two riders pulled away from Lord and began one of the closestfought battles of the day. Shimp seemed to ease up during the final two laps, but Tocco reall y came to life. Tocco pulled alongside Shimp on three occasions and put a wheel in twice, but Shimp dug deep and held on to win the moto and the overall victory. Lord again finished a consistent third, but was nearly 20 seconds behind at the finish . Tocco came back in the first 60cc (911) Modified Open class moto and scored the win aboard his FMF/Motu!/ Thor/Up Time/Smith-backed Kawasaki KX60, while Shimp settled for second after suffering a severe case of arm pump. Nine-year-old Shane Bess was impressive in third, while Jason Ciarlet- . ta and Blake Tirman rounded out the top five. Shimp answered the "who' s fastest?" question in the all-important second moto by pulling the holeshot aboard his Cycle Engineering-prepared KX60, and running away with the win and his second class championship of the day . Tocco followed at a distance, while Lord wa s again third. Garcia, Blake Tirman and Bess rounded out the top five. PAX Racing-sponsored Sean Collier posted an awesome four-moto sweep of both the SOcc Super Stock and Mod ified Expe rt classes. Only Chris Nihan was able to stay within striking distance of Collier during the first SOcc Super Stock moto. "He was a little nervous in the race," said Nihart's father, Mike. "He 's used to pulling away, and when he d idn't, he started looking back and losing time." Collier held on for a narrow win in front of the charging Nihan. Chad Munn rode hard for third and held off a motolong charge from Steve Hernandez. Collier holeshot the second moto and w av ed goodbye. N ihan started midpack and spent most of the race working up to second place, but -unfortunately for Nihan, Collier held on a I S-second lead.. Colli er crosse d the line for the win follow ed by Nihan, Hernandez, Joey Christy, and Justin Wilson. Both Nihan and Collier were entered in the 60cc (0-8) Novice class - the race tha t directly followed their SOcc motos. As soon as the two boys put their 50s in SO FIRST TIMER: 1.
