M ammoth Lakes while Davis and Windham argued over second. Once in control of second, Windha m began to reel in Lechien and was soon pressuring the former 125cc National Champion. Lechien lost his front end in a tight, ru tted tum an d went down, h and ing the lead to Windham. He remounted jus t behind Davis in third. "I just missed my line and dropped it," said Lechien. "It was either that, or my ton gu e got caugh t in the ch ain or something. Man, was I tired." O nce into the lea d, Windham performed the same d isappearing act 'as he had th e previous day. Windham raced home with a l a-second lead over Davis, who was an eq ual di stance ahead of Lechien. Dubach put forth an incredible charge, and came up only inches, short of nipping Lechien at the finish line. "I d idn't have any rea r brake," said Davis. " I couldn't charge like I wanted to, so I couldn't really chase down Windham ." Partridge was the winner in the 250cc Intermediate class, but barely managed to hold off a hard-charging Nelso n. After challenging for the lead early in the race, Nelson parted company w ith his Kawasaki and was forced to come from behind. At the finish, Partridge was only a few feet ahead of Nelson, but a few feet was all it took to nab the w in . Chris Wheeler finished third, while Foster and Chad Burleson rounded out the top five. FMF-sponsored And y Anaya trounced the competition in the 250cc Junior class, besting Mike Richter and the everstylish Josh Chisum.
