Th is time it was Wein ert holding the lead, with Clemence following closely. Higgi ns was aga in thi rd, but he lost gro und to the leade rs as the race wore on . Coming up th e large, rough hill before the finish line side by side with Weinert, Clemence wo n the race to the flag as well as the overall victory. Norman Smith and his 1974 Yamaha 250 were unbeatable in the Sportsman 250 Intermedi ate "B" and +30 intermedi at e "B" d ivision s . Smith's first 250 rnot o, however, was a wild affair. The Ith aca , New York, rider g ra bbed the holeshot, bu t then cras hed on land ing from the infamous Gravity Cavity. The lead then went to Bul taco rider Peter Rodriguez, who bailed out in the very same spot on the next lap. Penton pilot Rich Bau lch found himself with the lead next, bu t half a lap later fell victim to Smith, who had quickly gotten himself back up a n d into th e action. Baulch's 3-2 finishes were good enoug h for second overall. Hugh's Bultaco-mounted Tim Weaver al so ha d a good day, pu t ti ng in 4-3 finishes beh ind the Nash-Weinert fray in Spo rts man 250 Expert. In Sportsman 500 Expert, Weaver lost a close first-mote race to Daniel Field and h is CZ 400. The second moto saw Weaver hold off Field for the entire race, despite a determi ned effort by Field as th e pair approached the checkered flag. Field also had an excellent race with Weinert in +30 ~ Expert. Meanw hile, David Clemence of Narragansett, Rhode Island, took a pair of co me- fro m-be hind moto w ins on hi s 1974 Bultaco in the +30 Expert "B" division after running off the pace in Sportsman 500 Expert. When Weiner t and Clemence cam e together la ter in +40 Expert, the stage wa s set for a couple of the da y's best races. Following a two-year absence in the series, nearly 350 vintage entries turned ou t to tackle America 's premier naturalterrain mo tocross course. Riders got to sa mple one of racing's unique experiences: knocki ng down Unadill a's thick grass to create a motocross track of deep loam rolling up and down the Unad illa Riv er va lley hill sid e . The w ea the r ranged from sunshine to light rain and back to sunny again, so neither dust nor mu d was a factor. The firs t +40 Exp ert moto sa w Clemence grab the lead, shadowed by Weinert, the 1974 and '75 AMA National 500cc MX Champion and '76 Supercross Champion from Pine Bush, New York. Barry Higgins trailed at a slight di stance on his Dick Mann-built BSA 500 thumper. On the final lap, Weinert made his move into the lead, holding it to the line. The pace appeared to be even faster when the second moto got under way. R NHRA M Parts Nationals opar Schultz comprehends Englishtown By Todd Veney ENGLISHTOWN, NJ, MAY 2()'22 oh n Myers lo st an NHRA Mopa r Parts Nationals semifin al race to Dave Schultz, and with it a shot at tying Schultz's 'active record of five consecutive victories at the same race. At Raceway Park in Engli sh town, New Jersey, where Myers was undefeated in 18 heats in the 1990s, Schultz won with not just the top run in Pro Stock history but the top three: 7.54, 7.58, and 7.57, in that order. In the abbreviated (due to rain) three-shot qualifying format, Schultz's Sunoco Suzuki ran quicker on its worst qualifying lap than any other Pro Stock bike ever. The .58 backed up an off-the-trailer .54, within the one percent required by the NHRA for a national record. John Smith, Pro Stock's third-ranked racer (after Schultz and Meyers), met J ... 0\ C'l a> 1 50 Schultz in the final, wh ere his competitiv e 7.70 /172 .71 fell to Schultz's 7.62/175.81 - one of the best 10 runs of all time. It was the thir d fin al of 29.year-old Smith's ca ree r, all against Schultz. He won the 1993 Gato rna tionals in Gainesville, FL, and was second at the prestigious U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis. In those races, the last rider off the starting lin e was first to the finish. This time, both were out of the hole with identical .416 re action times. " It seemed like I got out on him a little, bu t by the time we go t to second gear, he w as right there. Then he put a bo ut a bike length on me fo r good when I hit th e bum p s," Smit h said . "Once yo u're tucked in and can tell if you're winning or losing, it's pretty predictable. Normally, you're not going to catch an yone if you're still losing at that point, but you stay on it in case something breaks." ยท . As always with Schultz's Greg Copetuned two-valve Suzuki, no thing did, and if his performance at Englishtown is any indication, it may take 7.5s to win from here on ou t. "I d idn't run any 7.5s in elimina tions because I didn't want to take a chance at blowing it," Schultz said. "We had the advantage and we already set the record, so I tried to just pace myself and not make mistakes in eliminations so we SPTMN 125 EXP: 1. Mike Boggia (Hon); 2. Darin Emswiler (Ho n); 3.
