MAY19 Harl ey nigh t and Mike Faria on the track made for a good evening's worth of en tertaimen t a t Lake Perris Speedway, as Fa ria swep t to ma in event wins on bo th sid es of the p rogram. Prior to the Scra tch main, odd s we re that Bobby Schwartz, who wa s loo king very strong all nig ht, would contin ue where he had left off the night before, with tw o more wins. As they lined up it was Fa ria on the po le with Schwartz on the outs ide, Gary Ackroyd and Mike Mazzacane in gates two and th ree . Faria, aboard h is Shoei /Oilzall /Scott USA/Terry Cable [a we , got ou t of th e s ta rt .o n top, a n d e ve n th ough Schwart z too k the low line, Faria appeared to ha ve a little extra horsepowe r. Mazzacane had lad y luck rid ing with him as he lost his primary cha in on the front straight; in the co mer it could have meant a serious accide n t. Ackroyd roun ded o u t th e fie ld in th ird place as Sch wa rtz chased Fa ria home . In the Handicap ma in, Faria a nd Schwartz worked the ir wa y throug h the field to take first and second with tw o laps to go in the Ha nd icap main. Jim Tuner had led from the beginning b ut could n' t hold off the a ttack of the aweso me tw oso me. Rand y Ski n n er, on h is new [awa, got thro ugh for third wi th Jeremy Ade n fourth. Beca use o f b ro ken eq ui pmen t t here were only two sidecars able to answer the call for the main. and that was almost too man y. Mar k Patterson and Alan Hall kind of got out of contro l, missing the starting ga te but almos t striking a Harley Davidson par ked on the infield . Sober VIcroRVIllE, CA, MAY 21 John Math erson and Dale Leeder combined their talents in the Speedway Sidecar Victorville Mayors Cup , takin g the Scratch racing victory before a sellout crowd of 4100 a t Gene Wood s' impressive high dese rt oval. A new a d d itio n to Speedway USA's 1994 fo r mat is th e four·la p Sideca r Victorville Mayor 's Cup. The six best scratch-race finishers line up in two row s, the front row being comprised of the 3 hea t winners and the second row containing the second pla ce leams. The first row proved to be the ho t ticket as the three fron t-row leams ended up finishing 1-2-3. Matherson and Leeder piloted their Mission Yamaha rig to the fro nt- ru n n ing spo t a n d held off th e st rong advances of second-place finishers Dirk Ga rdner and Doug Lynch, who were lookin g to sweep the Sidecar mains after winning the Handicap portion just flfteen min utes earlier. Don Horsley an d Jeff Medberry put up a fight, but had to settle for third place ahead of top second -row fmishers Mcin tyre and Ketcham . Bentley Barrell top ped the motorcycle Handicap main. Gunn steals big bucks at Firebird Road Race SAN BERNARDINO, CA, MAY 18 It may ha ve bee n cold at Glen Helen Speedway toni ght, bu t Bob b y Sch wa rtz w as ho t, as he ended the n igh t winning bo th the Scratch and Hand icap ma in events. After the fou r rounds of Scratch racing, the top fou r po ints-getters were John Aden with 14; followed by Schwartz, Edd ie Castro and Mike Faria with 12 each. Faria loaded into the nu mber one ga te with Aden next to him. Castro had the th ir d slo t and Sch wartz w as on th e o u tsi de. When the ga te went up , Schwartz, on his Jack Jarboe / Bell H elm e ts / Westech Bod y Wo rks/ Cfi/Oakley / Quicks ilver Clo thing-backed GM, put the hammer d own and made a n excelle nt first com er; it was all the edge he needed. Faria wa s right beh in d Schwartz with Aden th ird . Castro went to wo rk on the outs ide and got by Aden onl y to slide out in tum three. Aden got close to Faria and lost the battl e for second a t the checkered by the width of a tire. Fa ria a nd Schwartz. by virtue of their finish in the Scratch main. earned the right to run the Handicap main. As Bruce Flanders so aptly pu t it, they were co ming fro m downtown Devore. Schwartz bid ed his time after the start and wai ted for the lead ers ' mi sta kes be for e com in g th rough traffic to take the win. "I wen t ou t in practice and realized this ain 't the same body'" Gunn said . " It was so easy to tum and ride the motorcycle. I did the 31-lapper with no problem. I could have ridden twice tha t far." Cunn's do minati ng victories included a half· minute lead in the Solo era on the YZF and a 15-seco nd lead in th e Un li mited Su pe rs port event on the CBR. Another racer once aga in serio us abo u t competition is Dale Kieffer. The Las Vegas racer has decided he wants to wear the number--one plate for 1995, and his assa ult on the region consisted of entering 12 races ove r the weekend, includi ng bac k-to-back Solo End urance events. He scored thir d or belle r in the eight races that he managed to start. In the seven th race on Sunday (Heavyweight Supersport ), Kieffer was invo lved in a last-lap accid ent . He was in thir d place when ama teu r Eric Wilson crashed in front of him and Kieffer ran over the d owned rider, cras hing and putting his CBR600F2 out of commission.
