take the lead . By the end of the first lap, Gree r had made the pass on Deel for the second position. Gree r stay ed within sight of Hess for the en tire seve n laps and wa s putting the pressure on until he sto pped for fuel, and that pu t a little dis tance between them for a sho rt period . Deel then had some bra ke problems, d roppin g ou t at the end of the third lap and leaving Gree r to ba ttle wi th Hess alo ne . At the end of the race Greer was only 45 seco nds behind the wi nner. Hess . - Th e 250/5OOcc A Class was wo n by Mountain Suz uki's Mike Rom ans . Romans was third in the woo ds at the end of the opening lap befo re taking the class lead followed by Wesley Moran and Andrew Williams. Mora n and Williams ba ttled for the runner-up spot, a nd Willia ms came out on top to maintain the second-p lace position behind Romans to the flag . The Four-Stroke class has proven to be interesting this season . Getti ng into the woods)ast in the class, Glen Holcomb p ulled up by the third lap and put the pressure on leade r Joel Burgess. By the fourth lap Holcomb had ta ken the lead permanently, and Burgess had to settle for the second -p lace finish . Sober cosrAMESA, CA, MAY 20 Former World Pairs Champion Bobby Schwartz took the win in the Scratch main even t at Costa Mesa on the eve of America's most im portant speed way da te , the American Fin al, and the semi- re t ired Shaw n McCo nne ll showed th e crowd that he is not d one winn ing in speedway as he took a hard-fough t victory in the Handicap main. Schwartz started from th e po le position in the Scratch main , while in sta rting grids 2-5 to wer e Mike Faria, Brad Oxley, Shawn McConn ell and Robert Pfetzing . . Faria was too a nx io us a t the start an d touched the starting tapes, forcing refer ee Bill Heinlein to put h im back to the Hl-yard line . Th e second a tte mp t a t the sta rt went off well wi th Schw art z jum ping ou t to a dear lead as the pack con verged on tum one . Pfe tzi ng swept in to Schwartz from his ou tside s tarting sp ot, making contact that propelled Schwartz into the lead a n d Pfetzing in to ob livion. Oxley snuck into s eco n d on the e x t re me inside. Wi th Schw a rtz in front and dialed in on his Harley Da vidson of Westminster /Jack Jarbo /Bell Helmels / Q uicksilver /KNAC / Ga ry Hicks Rae- ing /eri Brace /Frame Shop/STP Ci rello /Troy lee Design-backed Weslake, and Oxley blocking the attempts of Faria to move into an attack position, th e end resu lt was that ~c hwartz sailed unscathed to his third Scratch main victory of 1994, Oxley held on to second jus t ahead of Faria. Pfet zing recovered from his firs t-tu m mis fortu n es a n d managed to wrest le fou rth away from McConn ell. Scratch main finish in a big way by out-distancing the other seven ride rs in the eigh t-lap Ha ndicap main off the 40 yard line. McConnell took the win wi th Oxley fo u r le ng th s in tow an d Faria jus t behind him. Firs t-time Cos ta Mesa rid er Buck Blair, who hai ls from Colora do, claim ed the top spo t in the Sup p o rt m ain e ven t w h ile the U.S. National Sidecar Champion Kenn y Mcin tyre joined with TIm Du rm an to take the win in the Sidecar Main.
