event were nose-to-tail until th e fou rth lap when Damron, doing two-wheel slides on the bl ue groove, began to open up a lead over the rest of the field . By the halfway point of the race. Dam ron was on his way to a seasonopening w in while behind the leader was a dogfight for second. Pauley held on to win the battle for the runner-up spot, while Key took third, Dan McDonnell fourth and Rickey Smith fifth. Open Expert action featured some of the same players but with different results. Damron got the holeshot but was edged out for the lead by a hard-eharging McDonnell. As the riders came around to complete lap one, McDonnell held the lead. Damron was right behind in second, while Pro-Am rider Greg Miller was holding his own in third place. Horsepower would be the name of the game on the perfectly prepared race track as the riders frei ght-trained through the turns and down the straightaways. Smith and John Hlebo kept the pressure on . Miller as they fought over fourth place. Twelve laps and no mistakes later, the order at the finish line remained the same: McDonnell, Damron, Miller, Smith and H1ebo. The Pro-Am main event was a "Salinas sweep" as the top fou r finishers hailed from Salinas, California. William Luker led the pack off the line but was quickly pa ssed by Mill er, who took over the point. Luker kept the heat on Miller as the pair put a little distance between themselves and the rest of the Pro-Am riders. Cecil Short and James Pitchford completed the sweep as they argued over the third spot, with Short getting the nod at the finish line behind winner Miller and runner-up Luker . Chris fischer completed the top five in his Pro-Am class debut. Resu lts WMN : 1. Sandn. Selva (Han); 2. Michelle l.ine.weolver (lion); 3. Kirnbrl'ly Gonzaln (Hon). WMN 100 A: 1.
