. .-: " .' '-1 By the time the gr een flag flew, 565 riders were entered to compete on the almost 12-miIe track that encompassed nearl y every type of terrain imagina ble. . As the morning fog lifted, the stage was set with 14 Pros on the line, including Hoenshell and series rivals Dean Lan e and Ste ve Mack. Jackie Uddell negotiated the downhill off-camber, first tum for the hol eshot whil e Hoenshell sw ept the outside and Lane got tied up on the inside. Amazingly, Lane wasted no time hammering to the front of the pack. Many had written Lane off for this race as he was competing with a broken hand. Within a mile of completing the first lap, Lane 's luck changed. He had built up over a one-minute lead when he highsided in a fast, rough section of the track. The cata pult to the ground left Lane dazed and confused, with mo re than his fair share of track rash . Hoenshell moved into the lead and went unchallenged for the remaining three laps of the race. Mack led the chase behind Hoenshell, followed closely by Jeremy Fipps. Mack was still reeling from being stripped of his win in the first round at Waco and was ou t for blood . Fipps was keeping pa ce bu t fou led a pl ug on lap two. Mack would s tay close to Hoenshell, but not close enough to challenge. The Dallas Honda ri der locked up second place, while Lane reen tered the race on his twisted mount to finish third. In Open Expert action, Brent Nalley put his KX500 into the early lead until he was overtaken b y KTM of Ft. Worth-backed Bert Reynolds. Reynolds secured the lead and s tay ed there although both Todd Tarver and Johnny Lamance threatened. Lamance and Tarver battled for second, exc hang ing po siti on sev eral tim es, with Lamance end uri ng at the finish to take second behind Reynolds. Results PRO: 1.
