On the down side, he crashed ha rd enough in the Modern Vintage 600cc race to bring the ambulance over for a look, and he hit the ground in Dinosaur Vintage as well. But in Class ic Vintage SOOcc OHV /7S0cc Sidevalve competition, BsA-m oun ted Breckon w restl ed th e lead away fro m Walter Pru itt and then held off a determined Pat Moroney for a n edge-o f-the -sea t win. A total of 80 entries tu rned ou t for the second round of AHRMA's national series , making thi s o ne of the biggest vin tage dirt track events yet. Mixed in with a large AMA Southeastern regional race at Daytona Municipal Stadium, it was a long da y and evening on the slick short track. Moroney almost d idn 't make th e Cla ssic Vintage fina l. While gelling lined up for the start, the Team Obso lete ex-Dick Mann Matchless GSO broke its chain. A mechanic sprinted for the pits, but didn't get back in lime and the race was fl a g ged off. Fo rt una tely for Moroney, a pai r of riders fell in the first turn, and the restart gav e him eno ug h lime to get the chain repaired . The second start saw Georgia's Pruitt away first, and by lap two Breckon was rig ht behind him, with Moroney a close third. Breckon made the move into the lea d o n the sixth of 10 la ps, a nd Moro ney followed to take over second. On the next lap, the New Yorker made his move on Breckon, but bobb led and lost gro und. The pair then entered traffic, and Breckon was able to open a lead that carried him to the checkered flag. In th e pre-19S1 Di nosaur Vin tage class, Harley-Dav idso n hand-shift ride r George Wills got into the lead on the second lap and managed to avoid the scrap behind him involvi n g Harle ymounted Leo Anthony Jr. and Beno Rodi on a Royal Enfield. Anthony held on for second. Even though he fell a nd caused a restart, Bultaco-mounted Chris Baldwin ran off to win the pre- 1967 Classic Vintage 2S0cc race . Getting to the front, however, meant taking the lead away from Ossa rider Steve Nace and Harleymounted Dan Ged eon, both of whom led at various points. Th e pre-74 Modern Vintage 2S0cc· race was red -flagged at three d ifferent po ints, eac h time wit h Yamaha p il ot John Blackst ock lead ing the way. The race was called after the third flag, giving the win to Blackstock, followed by Ossa-m ounted Ricky Soles and Yamaha rider Darrell Bryant. The Mod ern Vin tage 600cc class belonged to Yamaha-mounted Kenny Parker. Mounted on a Bultaco, Tom Morgan looked like he might p ose a serious challenge - until he fell on the last lap and gave second to the Matchless of Moroney. Riding a big bike on a slippery little track was tricky business, and Triumph rid er Merlyn Wertz did it best, taking th e lead away from fellow Triumph pilot John Warr en near mid-race.
