Cooper shows vintage form By Matt Benson OCALA. n, MAR 5 u y Cooper mad e h is vintage motocross debut doing wha t he does best - going fast and w inning. Riding a 7 4 Penton 400 for series sponsor Vintage Ir on, the promotocrosser-turned-off-road-racer domin a ted both 30+ Expe r t motos, In the Sportsman 500cc Expert class, however, things didn't go as smoothly. Cooper won the opening 500cc moto, bu t was left sitting on the line with bike p ro b lems as t he second ra ce ro ared away. The Vintage Iron crew scrambled into action, fina lly ge tti ng hi m go ing well into the race. Wringing the Penton for all it was wo rth, Cooper was able to work his way up to 12th place, giving him fifth overall. David Ellis grabbed the overall win by taking 2-1 finishes on his Yamaha VZ36O. The Florid a Motorsports Complex played host to more than 350 entries for the opening AHRMA National. Considerable work had gone into making the circuit more vintag e-friendly, but the track became hard-packed and rough as the day wore on. Thankfully, there was very little dust under the warm, sunny skies. Some of the da y's closest racing came in the Sportsman 12Scc Intermed iate class. The fi rst moto of this Honda G CR125-dominated d ivision was a battle between John Ziska and William Nazelrod, with Ziska moving to the fr on t abou t halfway through the race. Nazelrod hung onto the lead for the en tire second moto, while Ziska had to work h is way past Yamaha-mount ed Robert Leimenstoll and Gord on Ores ti to an eventua l second-place - a nd second overall - finish. The 12Sec Experts also put on a good show, with Greg Bastek an d his Honda working from a bad start into the lead in moto one. The second race was a contest between Bastek and Mike Boggia (who d id n' t make th e results list in the first moto) early in the race. Then , as Boggia opened a gap in the mote's latter stages, a ba ttle for second raged between Bastek and Bob Kuhnsm an, wit h Bastek prevaili ng at the checkered flag . Th e defending class champion's 1-2 finishes netted Bastek the overall w in. In Spo rtsman SOOcc Intermediate racing. the first mo to went to Suzuki rider Roger Norris, who won the race to the line aga inst Gary DiPietro. Mot o two belonged to Yamah a-m o u nted Bart Hiter, after a tu ssle w it h Norri s and DiPietro. The overall win, though, was No rris', with 1-2 finishes . Norris also earned an overall w in in the Sportsman 2S0cc Intermedia te B d iv ision, and D iPiet r o too k the 40 + Intermediate wi n. Dick Ma n n was a d o uble w in ner, with his beautifully restored Monark thumper, in Premier 500cc Expert and 50+ Expert , making up somewha t for the embarrassm ent of losing his ga s tank in the fir st Pr emier 500cc II moto. a Florida Motorsports Comp lex Ocala, Florida Results: March 5, 1994 S PTMN 125 EX: I.
