These riders, togeth er with returning also-rans,
are hop ing to win their first motocros s trophy.
Of the 13 ride rs in the class, four won tro phies
and will have to move up to Beginner in their
nex t competitio n.
.
Joel Stalkevicus wa s in h is seco nd try and
led the field all the way in mota one after passing Aammang on lap three .
Sta tkevicus and Jeff Ren frow tangled wi th
Phil Klingler on the first lap of moto two and all
three had to come back from dead last to finish
secon d , th ird and fourth overall, respecti vely.
Renfrow actu ally held the lead over Flamma ng
on the fourth and fifth laps , but the comeback
effort left him too spe n t to hold it and fla mman g wrested the lead away before the checkered nag. Meanwhile, Darcy Weidenbach. with a
pair of 5-4 finishes, took the fourth-place trophy
to qual ify for the Beginner class in his next outing.
Eas tside Cycle tea m member Jeff Ho mo ki
needed only a couple of lap s in each moto to
take the lead and finis h first amo ng the 250cc
Begi nn er riders . Stev e Som erville w as a fast
starter and led both times, but faded as the race
progressed. Unlike Somerville, Tom Stuckey III
was less agg res s ive in establishing position
early, bul continued to move up to finish 3-2 for
second pl ace overall. Adam Bod e, w ith a 2-3
performance, was third.

Conaway cleans up atLACR GP
By Greg Robertson
PALMDALE, CA,FEB. zr
Yamaha YZ250-mounted Craig Cona way used a
good sta rt to his adva ntage as he ran away and
hid from the rest of the Vet Inte rmediate class in
Californ ia Racing Clubs Magic Mountain Grand
Prix at Los Ange les Cou nty Raceway.
Karl Allen got his CR500 fired up the quickest to lead Conaway, Brian Renshaw and Mike
Edmond s from the dead engine start. It took a little over a lap for Conaway to fmd a way around
Allen and into the lead. Allen wasn't about to let
Co na way get away and sha d owe d hi s every
move for the next few lap s. Chris Leiker was
making up plenty 01 ground after a mid pack
start and began pres suring Renshaw for third.
Near th e hal fw ay point of th e 45-minute
race, Conaway got relief from the pn."Ssure when
Allen had trouble and dro ppe d to fourth. Renshaw inheri ted the run ne r-up position, but it
d id n't look like he was gain ing any gro und on
Conaway, wh o wa s now working up thr ough
the Exper t riders . Allen wa s back on the move,
repassing Leiker for third and closing on Renshaw.
Conawa y was flawl ess in the last few laps of
the race, pulling out to a command ing lead in
h is cla ss and pa ssing all but one Expert rider
belore the checkered nag fell. Allen put forth the
extra effort and got around Renshaw with a couple of lap s remaining for a well-deserved second. Leiker also p ut the move on Renshaw with.
the race winding down to finish third.
