Jill Co flm.m Lewis stretches leadat San Diego Ultracross SAN DIEGO, CA, FEB. 26 Kyle Lewis came into San Diego 's Jack Murphy Stad iu m for roun d tw o of the Mickey Thom pson Ultracross Series wi th a healthy poin t lead , and h e left w ith a h eal th ie r o ne as the Team Nolee n /Sizzler Yamaha-mo un ted Lewis posted the win in the main event before 36,373 fans. Th e first heat race was a two-rider battle betwee n Lewis and Mike Healey. The two riders traded the lead seve ra l times righ t up to the final lap, and they crossed the line in a photo finish, Healey was given th e n od over Lew is while Scott Myers ra n thir d . By the end of the first lap in hea t race two , d efend ing se ries cham p ion Larry Brook s had clim bed thr ou gh traffi c from h is rear sta rting p osition to ass u me th e lead wh ile Ron "The Dogger" Lechien trailed a distant second and Ray Crumb was thi rd . Brooks we nt on to win the seco nd hea t race, followed by Lechien and Crumb. In the IQ-lap feature, Lewis grabbed the lead on lap two an d double-jumped his wa y over the BO· foot doubles that were giving many of the other riders problems. That proved to be the difference, as Lewis led all bu t the opening lap of the fea ture, taking the checkered flag for the win and jum ping out to a 33-point lead over secondplace finisher Ray Crum b. Ziturroles Rush Lake Ice Race By Tim McBride RUSHCITY, MN, FEB.20 Larson's Cycl e /Honda Town-spon sored Dan Zitur proved that at 3B years old, you don 't get any old er, you just go faster, scoring ba ck-to-b eck wins in the 30+ and Open Pro finals as the Ma rtins RL 'SOrt hosted the Dirt Track Riders Association's fifth ice race of the seaso n on Rush Lake. Zitur pu lled the holesh ot a t the start of the IQ-Iap 30+ fina l and set a pace tha t onl y Randy Tri p le tt w as able to match. As th e duo hamme red it ou t, they pulled away from the rest of the pac k. Dave Je n d ro, John Larson, Jo e Tromber g. Mark Deal and Nathan Sla te r followed at a d istanc e. Just past the halfway point , Tripl ett lost control of his mount in the hairpin section and slammed hard into the snowbank. Tripl ett remounted slowly and courageou sly finished the race . Wi th tha t, Zi tur cru ised to the checkered flag uncont ested to sco re the win . "Tha t was my first ice race win ever," Zitur said. Jendro w as a di stant seco n d , w h ile Trombe rg, Larson, and Deal finished in the top five. The red flag was wa ved at the start of the Open Pr o main , with Triplett aga in p ickin g himsel f up - this time in tum one (which happened to be the fastest turn on the race track). Triplett was alright and after the restart led for the first lap , but he wa s relega ted to third on lap two by Zitur and Pro -Am dirt tracker Norb Gregory . Zitu r was under the wa tchful eye of Gregory for the remainde r of the race, bu t was able to hold on for the win. Darr in Ch elin e xtend ed h is seaso n- lo ng unbeaten streak in the 250cc B class to five. The Lar son's Cycl e/Torco /WD-40 / Wh ite Bros.spo n sored MX rid er ea sil y topped th e ma in event ahead of secon d- place finisher Jason larson, who was the only rider able to keep Ch elin in sig ht during the rac e. Mike Durham, Greg Jendro and Sk ip Cristenson fini sh ed th ird , four th and fifth, respectively. The BScc Mini final was no big deal for nineyear-old Adam Deal. The tiny speedster out-distanced Mat t Power s, Ad am Henrichs and Scott Jendro to score his third ice race win of the season. On e of most exiting races of the da y had to be the Open B final. John Larson wa s hounded by Ch elin for the first five lap s un til Tromberg passed both of them on lap five to take con trol. Meanwhile, Jendro worked his wa y up from a Now Ava ilable Through Cycle News Video Theater 1993 AMA NATIONAL MOTOCROSS SERIES '9 3 Sacramento/Mt. Morris AMA National MX (#151C) Team Kawasaki's Mike Kiedrowski made the holeshot and beat the heat to win the 250cc class at Sacramento, California's Hangtown Classic Motocross. Team Yamaha's Jeff Emig walked away with the with the 125cc first mota win, but fell short in the second mota. Team Honda's Jeremy McGrath poured on the heat in the second 125cc mota to walk away with the overall win. . At Mt. Morris, Pennsylvania, Team Yamaha's Damon Bradshaw fought off Kiedrowski for his first 250cc class overall win of the '93 season.
