Diem, Price double at Motorama Short Track McClintock motors to Perris Motocross victory By Len Breech By Tony Alessi HARRISBURG, PA, FEB. 18 The two most dominant local riders in recent years, Warren Diem and Georgie Price, each left the Pennsylvania State Farm Show Arena after the Eastern Harley Davidson Dealers Association-sponsored short track portion of the 16th Annual Motorama Indoor Race and Speed Show with a p air of wins. Diem picked up w here he left off last year with wins in the 600cc A and Veteran finals on his Fisher's Cycle /Diem 's Cycles /McGrane Racing-sponsored Hond a, while Price ag ain took the 600cc Pro and 2SOcc Pro class wins on his TShirts Ete./Maroney's H-D/Taylor White-spo nsored machines. Both of Diem's wins were very similar, with Tom Majeski a close second in both and Bob Sweeten taking third. Majeski was on Diem 's tail in the late laps of the 600cc A ma in; Diem later said his machine had a slight miss and he was just holding on to the lead . Diem mu st have gotten it fixe d, for in the Veteran class he ag ain jumped into the lead wit h Majeski in tow while the remain der of the fiel d was slo w ed by a downed r ider in the fo ur th t u rn . Sweeten nu dged his way by Rob Smith for fourth on lap four, then b ulled his way by Mike Rabol d for third on the eigh th lap. Eddie Hidden grabbed the lead at the official start of the 600cc Pro final wi th Georgie Price, Ch uck Buchanan, Mike Varnes and Robe rt Miller in close purs uit. Price took his us ual place in front as they entered the first tum on the next lap, with Miller taking third. The ord er stayed the same to the end, bu t with a lot of prob ing and b umping going on behind Price. In the 250 Pro fina l, Price gra bbed the lead fro m Buc ha na n, Jim Haas an d Kevi n Varnes, with the only change being Varnes taking third on the backstraigh t on lap three. Todd Winsett took the 250cc A final , while james McGovern and Bill MacQueen took the 200 a nd 250cc B classes. Bria n Phill ip s a nd Donnie Mullen hand led th e litt le guy classes with wins in the 55 and 85cc divisions, respectively. Derrick McClintock pos ted an impressive double-motc sweep of the 60cc Beginner class during the GFI Super Saturday MJ( held at Perris Raceway. The first 60cc beginner race saw a mote-lon g duel b etween McC lin tock a nd Ty so n Davis. Both riders put on a show as they pu lled away from the ir com petition and waged a private race for the lead . In the end, McClintock prevailed by keeping a coo l h ead in the wake of constant p ressure from a very determined Davis. justin Lavoie finished in third whi le Nick Wells and Andrew Renshaw rounded out the top five. Davis tu rned the tab les in the second mot o by pulling the ho leshot and leadin g in the open ing la ps . McCli nt ock once agai n kep t his cool and followed closely in second place, wa iting for a chance to pounce, which came with two laps left to go when Davis cam e into a tight sw itchback t w o gears too h igh. While Dav is tried desparately to d ow ns hift into the correct gear, McClintock simp ly mo tored aro und the outside an d in to the lea d. McCli ntock kep t it toge the r for the mo to an d overall win in front of Davis, Luis jauregui, Chris Thorp and Nick Wells. Steven Brewis got a long overdue win in the Pee Wee Stock Beginner class . Brewis holesh ot the open ing mo to over three-year-old C o le Seely, justin Sommers and Garrett Berry, was ting little time and quickly opening a four-seco nd lead. Seely kept Brewis in sight to the finish where he crossed the line second behind motowinn er Brewis. Seely pulled a suprise h olesho t in the a llimpo rtan t second moto and led the firs t thr ee laps of the race. Som mers and Berry collid ed and went d own early in the race, and both riders wo uld re-en ter the race a lap down. As the race p rogressed , Seely began to feel the p res su re from Brewis. As the twl>riders cam e into lapped traffic, Seely too k the outside line and beca me trapped while Brewis dove under Seely and the lappers to take the lead. Brewis went on for- the eventual win over Seely, Berry and Sommers. Results 600 PRO-AM: 1. Georgie Prier (Rtx); 2. Eddie Hidden (Rtx); 3. Robert Millt-r (Rtx);4 . Miu Varnes (Rtx ); 5.
