Honnold hauls at LACR GP
By Greg Robertson
PALMDALE, CA, DEC. 12
Chris Honnold ran away and hid from the rest
of the Mini Novice riders in the California Racing Club's Merry Christmas Grand Prix at Los
Angeles County Raceway.
Chris Tocco go t things s ta r ted w ith a
h ol esh o t fro m the dead e ngine start. Chris
Tho mpson rounded the first tu rn in second followed by Honnold and Jonathan Shimp. Honnold wasn' t messing around as he flew past
both Tocco a nd Thompson in the h igh sp eed
desert portion of the course with onl y half a lap
complete. HOJmold was setting a blistering pace,
building a lo-second lead by the third lap .
By this time, Shawn Mitchell, Greg Andrew
and Jason Dubin had freight-trained to the front
of the class, after midpack starts , to battle over
the runner-up position. At the ha lfway point,
Andrew was able to break away in an attempt to
chase down Honnold . Andrew started trimming
a few seconds off Honnold's lead before going
• down in the mu d . Andrew quickly recovered to
hold second place, but Honnold's lead, now at
.
20 seconds, seemed insurmountable.
Honnold's lead steadily grew as the laps
wound down, and he took th e checkered flag
with 30 seconds to spare.
" It wa s muddy and slip pery, a nd I almost
crashed a couple of times. Nobody was gaining
on me; 1 just kept pulling aw ay." Honnold said .
"Grand Prix races are my favorite; 1 do good at
them."
Andrew came hom e a comforta ble second in
front of a fierce battle for third. Mitchell and
Dubin traded third place numerous times on the
last couple of laps. With the whi te flag out, Jason
Webb worked up to join Mitchell a nd Dubin.
The three ride rs were all over each other all the
wa y down to the wire with Dubin jus t edging
out Mitchell and Webb .
.
George La Mont e was the crea m of the cro p
in the Mini Beginner ranks. La Mont e pulled the
holeshot but was quickly passed by Jay Schreffler. Schreffler only lasted half a lap in the lead
before La Monte sho t pa st to regain the position.
From that point it wa s tota l domination by La
Monte, as he roosted to an impressive 45-second
lead by the finish . Donnie Durrer also put in a
good show, coming from dead last off the start
to take second ahead of Bryan Lang.

Joe Bruce ironmanned his way to the second race

the Hart Brothers in race one. The third race was

Pucelik.
Bruce took the point at the start of the first of
three two--hour scrambles events over a new 2m ile track in and a ro und the fam ed San Jose

Bruce's KXl25 didn't make it pa st the second lap

Christian finished third and firstlronman.
Bruce dominated the second race for mid~

and then broke a chain, but ran into deep trou ble wh en his sile n ce r ca me off jus t four la ps

than a minu te for hasty repa irs, Bru ce took the
win by just a few seconds over Chris Carr.
Carr had two run-ins, literally, wi th the secon d o n e tak in g off th e b a ck e nd of Bruce

" And he was on the righ t sid e, so I was commi t~

across. I'd jus t barely tou ched gro un d when we
collided . It was pretty scaiy ."
Both rid ers wer e OK, but Douglas's Suzu ki

three laps to go, but failed to catch Bruce a t the
checkers.

Hammer nails two at
Marysville Motocross
By John Sil va
MAR'/SVII.I.E, CA, DEC. 19
Hon da -mounted Kelly Hammer dominated the
junior ranks by racin g to victo ry in both the 125
and 250cc junior contests at Marysville's RiverfrontMX.
The 125cc ma chines took to the track under a
heavy fog. Ian Radich led to the first turn with
David Lod ermeier, Hammer, and Phillip Atondo heading the tigh tly-grou p ed p ack. Loderme ier lost control on the exit of the finis h-li ne
rockers and found himself in a mudhole, Ladermeier scrambled to recover, b ut not before Ham~
mer, Matt Gibb and most of the field slipped by.
Out front, Intermediate-ranked Radich was
rock eting around the Riverfron t trac k despite
the severely limited visibility. Nearl y all the rid ers had abandoned their goggles by m id -race,
making advancement even more difficult for the
racers . Somehow, Lodermeier overcame the dif~
fic u lties and aga in mo ved into reach of the
front-runne rs while the closing lap found Gibb
passing Hammer to secure second. The checkered flag flew on Rad ich first, followed by Gibb ,
Ha mme r, Lad erm eier and a late-eharging Ryan
Duntsch.
Duntsch grabbed the ho leshot in moto tw o
w ith Ha m m er in h ot p ursui t. H ammer soon
moved around Duntsch an d qui ckly built a comforta ble lead . Rad ich, Duntsch and Lad ermeier
battled for second p lace with Duntsch emerging
as the top d og. At the finish, it was Ha mmer takin g the w in , a nd fi r st o ve r a ll, fo llowed b y
Duntsch and Ladermeier.
In the 250ccJunio r class, Rich Morgan put his
Suzu ki out front in the early going with Hammer
second, whil e Darrell Mabry, Kevin Green and
Rich Pri ngle d iced for thi rd . Hammer ch ased .
Morgan for tw o laps an d stead ily closed in on
the lead er. The third lap foun d Hammer all alon e
out fron t; Morgan retired after comp leting the
lap . This left Kevin Green in the numbe r two
spo t, with Beginn er- ranked John Morgan thir d .
The order rema ined unchanged to the finish.
Hammer holesho t the second moto but bobbled on lap two, thus allowin g Pringle and Mabry
to pass . Hamm er recovered to give chase from
th ird position. A ba tt le royal was so on raging
betw een the top three. Hammer moved ahead of
both Pringle and Mabry on the last lap. Hammer
railed the rest of the race, taking the checkered flag
by only a narrow margin over a relentless Pringle.
Mabry and Rich Morgan followed in third and
fourth, respectively. John Morgan was next across
the line to easily top the Beginner class.
