Mark Thome Emig entertaining at Perris MX By Tony Alessi PERRIS, CA, DEC. 18 Team Yamaha's new number one rider Jeff Emig used innovative riding to capture the 250cc Pro class victory during the GFt Super Saturday motocross held at Perris Raceway. The opening moto marked the return of Bader Manneh as he pulled a clean holeshot aboard his Suzuki of ltaly-backed RM25O. Manneh was no match for Emig, who moved into the lead by the end of the first lap . Ryan Hughes began to move up from a les s then pleasing start, passing Billy Frank for third, then double jump ing past Manneh for second. About the same time, Emig began to do the unthinkable - he turned two big tabletops into one huge double jump. Emig launched his factory Yamaha nearly 100 feet ·across the faces of the two jumps. " I was thinking about it in practice" Emig said. " It's gnarly because it's completely blind". Hughes p icked up on Emig's innovative idea and became the second and last pro rider to try the daring leap. Emig went on for the eventual win followed by Hughes, Manneh, Brian Deegan and Oint Latham. Manneh pulled a repeat holeshotin moto two only to once again get gobbled up by Hughes and Emig . Hughes had a chance to lead for one lap before Emig used his jumping skills to take over the lead. Hughes stayed close and even poked a wheel in front of Emig from time to time during the moto, but in the end it was Emig for the win. Hughes rode a great race for second followed at a distance by Manneh. Deegan and Jason Krempin. Damon Huffman smoked the 12Scc Pro class during the first moto, opening up a 10-second lead and riding unchallenged throughout the race. Hughes started outside the top 10 and worked himself up to second by the finish. Donald Upton ran up front early in the race bu t faded to fifth at the finish behind Manneh and Brit Jamie Dobb. Huffman chased Hughes for most of moto two but couldn't find the extra speed required to make a pass. Hughes went on for the moto and overall win followed closely by Huffman. Dobb finished a distant third while Deegan and Upton rounded out the top five. Results so BEG: 1. Dallas Prick (Yam); 2. Carlos Gonzalez (Yam l. S/STK NOV: 1. DofWIld Chollar (Yilm); 2. Honda-mouted Jeff Healey came away the big winner at this year's running of the Christmas Grand Prix at Carlsbad Raceway, taking top honors in the Pro class. . The Christmas G.P. has become a tradition of good times, and this year's event was no exception. The racers were greeted with crystal blue skies, and a six-mile, Frank Thomason-designed race course. Big winners in all of these festivities were the needy families in the San Diego area, as over 1000 pounds of food was collected for distribution during Christmas. An additional treat for all in attendance was the Santa sweep rider of the day, who was none other than seven-time National champion Rick Johnson, who looked exceptionally fast for a retired guy. ., At the start of the Pro race, Jeff Martinez rocketed his Yamaha into the early lead ahead of Healey and Intermediate riders Kevin Geyer and Lance Johnson. Healey made his move early with a daring outside pass on Martinez to wres· tie away the lead. . . Bike set-up for the long, high-speed G.P, track was critical, and Geyer put it all together on the wide open sections of the track to rocket past both the Pro riders and pull away. Healey inched. away from Martinez as the race wore on, but was suprised and confused as he could get nowhere near Geyer . Geyer took the intermediate and overall win with Heal ey right behind for the Pro win ahead of Martinez and Mike Brown . The final race of the d ay was a team race, and much to the delight of the crowd, Rick Johnson cruised off the line in last place and lit it off. One lap later, Johnson was up to third, having passed around 30 riders. He was about to occupy the top slot when he landed hard off a jump and the carburetor on his Yamaha fell off. Johnson attempted to get it going again, but to no avail, and he was forced to DNE The team of Tint Daily and Craig Breihan took home the victory . Schellenberger shells Lake Whitney Motocross By Kat Spann WHTINEY, TX, DEC. 4-5 Roy Schellenberger survived a fierce ballle with Clint Latham to post a win in the 250cc Expert class during the two-day Texas Regional Championship at the Lake Whitney Cycle Ranch. Latham was too hot to touch as he sizzled his way into the holeshot and charged in front ·of the IS-rider pack . Schellenberger hounded latham for three laps and reeled him in inch by inch until lap three when Latham miscued on the exit of the sweeper. before the Dolly Doubles, which allowed Schellenberger to slice by. Schellenberger raced at the front of the class and tried to keep one move ahead of Latham. Schellenberger picked up some of the trackside banners in his rear wheel, and his brakes were literally smoking near the end of the moto as Latham hounded him for the lead. Tinte ran out on Latham as the checkered flag first fell on Schellenberger. Schellenberger took charge in moto two flanked by Latham and Brad Woolsey. It appeared as though Schellenberger would not be beaten in the moto for he began to leave the pack behind. But midway through the moto, Latham cau ght Schellenberger and shot past him for the lead off the Chuck Sun Hill. " I had about a four or five-length lead and got too close to the wall below (in the river bottom), and paid the price for it," Schellenberger said . "But I kept my motor going. got back up , started charging after him , made another mistake and almost gave up at that point." Schellenberger rode with a vengeance to catch Latham and, after three laps, was able to successfully pass Latham to again take the lead on the back straigh t. Schellenberger was able to hold the lead for the second-moto and overall win. Schellenberger wasn't as lucky in the 125cc Expert clas s as Latham gained a measure of revenge by racing to 1-1 moto scores for the overall win. Results TEEN MINI STK: 1. Logan Wtllia.ms (Yam); 2.
