Before the race, nearly everyone pointed to factory Husqvama nat ional star Kevin Hin es as the most likely winne r of the even t, but as the competitors began their 6S-m ile run, it became clear th at th e clu b had d one a sk ill fu l job a t check p lace ment as nearl y all of the top con ten d e rs for the overall honors had drop ped a three at the first checkpoint After zeroing the second check, things started s ha pi ng u p in the b at tl e for the win as Fairfax, Hines and reigning Grand Champion Paul Milliken had all dropped a two while their rivals all dropped a three at the third check. The first security check, the fifth, would see Hines top the chart as he blistered through the tight Franklin forest sectio n with a 6.55. Hot on his heels was his fellow national campaigner Fairfax as he ran through the nags at 7.20 . After zeroing the sixth check, Hines had the misfortune to smash his shift lever into a rock which quickly ended his day. "I hit a rock after the known control which damaged my shifting mechanism," Hines said. H I realized something was wrong when I couldn't get the machine to shift properly a nd I was only able to get it to move from fourt h to third un til it finally jammed itself into first - for good ." The big con troversy of the day was the score that fro n t-ru nne r Fairfax acqui red through the last section as he ende d up with a 4:51 while ove rall contend ers Rick Cla xton would drop a 8,J2 and Milliken would claim 8,J7 at the nags. Those sco res were especially interes ting when yo u co ns id e r th at Fa ir fax wa s ba t tl in g wit h Milliken th rough the later stages of tha t parti cular section and he was on minu te 1S compared to Millik en 's starting minute of 11 which led to accusations by a few riders that Fair fax cut the course, eithe r un int en tionall y or otherwise . A protest was called and the competition com mittee met to discuss the situa tion. Afterward s, it was d ecided to let the sta nd in gs s tay the w ay they were . Wh e n th e du s t sett le d, Fai r fax claimed his first overall win in NETRA competition w ith a score of 21. Cu rre nt p oin ts leader Claxton sl ip pe d by Milliken to clai m second overall .
