Ken Reed (58) raced Bob Arens (86) in the 125cc Novice class at LACR MX. 13-point loss on his KTM whi le Harold Collins, another Michigan rider, took his Kaw asa ki to the High-Point B win w ith a 16-point rid e; . The first rive r cross ing w as just tw o mil es from the star t. Th is was as far as some riders got, as they fo u n d ou t th eir w aterproofi n g wa sn't up to the job. Freddette, rid ing on row 30, hit the water like he cou ld walk on it, whi ch is ju st abo u t wh a t he di d as h e nev er slowe d down and ski mm ed across the river like he was in a boat. This maneuv er helped Fredett e shave qu ite a bit of time as he was the only rid er to arri ve at the first check with a five-p oint loss. All the top riders ze ro ed th e nex t se ve ral checks, but at check four Preddette stretched out hi s lead by onl y droppin g one poi n t whjle Scharphom. Bob Bean, and Larry Berquist each lost thr ee p oin ts followin g the har e scram bles cou rse section. Followi ng this section were several short easy woods that saw most riders ze ro tw o o r three chec ks . Most of.the rest o f th e endu ro featured fairly easy sandy wood s tra ils and open forest lanes that woul d see the fas ter rid ers averaging 24 mph easily. Going int o the eighth check, Fred e tte once again pull ed fu rth er ou t in fron t by cardi ng a two poi nt lo ss to Bean ' s thre e poin ts an d Scharph om's fou r p oints . Collins hit this check five minutes late. At the ninth check, Bean go t burned by hitt ing the ch eck th ree seco nds hot for a loss of two points while most of the other riders all zeroe d it. Fredette went on to zero the last two checks whil e many riders lost points. Results into the sa me rock laden creek bed. From here the riders had a choice of fou r or five differe nt lines to the exit. The Rook ie Class wa s won by Jacob Mort on with a score of nine po ints. In the Expert class, Mike Komer came awa y the win ner with a' total o f 15 p o in ts, while Da v id Reed wo n th e Adv anced class with a total of 66 points. Section four started in a rav ine with a sho rt climb onto a side hill, then on to a short run at a larger climb up a hill. It was here the riders could floa t a tum or h op into p osition to at tack the hill climb. Man y o f the top rid e rs were ab le to hop a nd position themsel ves for the hill climb, while the others had a harder time with the h ill climb. The Intermed iate Class was won by Cha rlie Camin w ith a score of 12 points. The senior A Class winn er was Lave rne Bowen, also with a score of 12 poin ts. Sections seven and eight were con ti n u ous se c tio ns u p another c reek b ed . Section eight did not seem to be a problem for the Intermediate Class riders, but Section seven wo uld take a point here and there . Resu lts we re three riders side by side into the first tum; Vohland, Pestana and Boykin. By the time they had reached the bottom of the sandhill freeway, Vohland had captu red the iead and Pestana held second . Boykin was third and Greg Allen fourth with Paladi no roundin g out th e top fiv e. Vohland and Pestana began to ba ttle fur iou sly. Their pace had them quickly opening up a gap between themselves and the res t of the pack. On lap two, on the freewa y, Pestana make his move. The two riders disappeared for a mom ent. When they came into view , it was Pestana lead ing the race . Unfortu nately, a half a lap lat er Pes tana wou ld come to a h a l t. The c hai n on h is Kawasaki ha d d e rail ed a llow ing Vohland to pass and hold a five second lead on the rest of the field. Vohland continued to open up the distance between himself and the rest of the field as he headed to wa rds th e v icto ry in m.oto two. With half a lap to go, Palad ino made the pass on Allen to assu re him self the second position . The overall resul ts we re Vohland, Palad ino, Pestana , Boykin an d Allen in the top five spo ts. Shaut takes oneat Bath Trial By D on Allis 38 BATH, NY, OCT. 3 Donald Shaut had one more clean secti on an d ed ged Robert Brown in the Novi ce class at the Bath Trials after both rid er s tied w ith a score of 36 points. The Senior B class was won by Richard Clar k with a score of 18 po ints. The Super Senior class winner was Richard Oliver wi th the lowest score of 22 poi nts. Section one proved to be a very good cha llenge to the Novice Class riders. CA, OCT. 17 Tyson Vohland took the wi n in the 250cc Pro cla ss at rou n d five of the GFI Raci ng -N o rth Battle of the 90's Fall Motocross Series. Whe n the gate dropped for the first mot o of the 250cc Pro 's, Dan Paladino pulled off the ho les h ot followed by Jon Nicola us an d Josh Boykin. As th e rider s h ad d isappeared for a moment on the freeway downhill, Vohland took the opportunity to take the lead . Nicolaus held on for sec ond, with Palad ino moving aro und Boykin for third. Vohland quickly began to open u p a gap between h im se lf a nd Nicola us . Voh land an d Ni colaus st ill held th e top tw o spo ts as Paladino and Jeff Pestana began to battle fo r thi rd . Be h in d th e sa nd hi ll, Pes tana moved underneath Palad ino to take over th ird . On e lap lat er, Pes tana also pa ssed Nicolaus to take second. Pestana wasted no time at all closing in on Voh land wh o had previously looked as if he wou ld be un contest ed th ro ug ho u t the race. The two rid ers, Vohland and Pestana , began to batt le. Pesta na const an tly cha nged his lines in an effort to keep Voh land on h is toes w hile he tried to figu re ou t a w ay to g et arou n d th e Ya ma ha rider. Onc e again, Pes ta na used the sand hill tu m to make his move, taking the lead an d never look ing back. Vohland was seco nd and Paladino was third at the checkered flag.
