Shelton, Bums wage
warat Phoenix Motocross
By Tom R. Griffith
PHOENIX, AZ,OCT. 9-10
Sean Shelton and Cory Bums led 17 Pee Wees as
the larges t class atta cked the Thrash erland MX
Pa r k with Sh elt on tak in g top ho nors on
Satu rday while Bums won the class on Sunday.
On Satu rd ay, the two rid ers battled in the
wet sand lap after lap, exchangi ng the lead several times. Afte r over 10 lead changes in each
mot o, Saturday's Stock win went to She lton with
his 2-1 moto perfo rmance. He was followed by
Bums, Steven Schwarts,' and Steve n Stu ltz.
Sunday sa w 14 Pee Wees return for round
two action. Bums adjusted to the drier soil and
turned on the gas, fighting off cha llenges by the
two Steves, Stultz and Schwartz. Bums powered
to a perfect I-I score.
Saturday's second larg est class, the 60cc Mini
Beginner had a competitive array of rid e rs as
there wa s only one repeat from mot o one to
mo to two. Western Honda-sponsored Bobby
Sawy er was a comforta ble 1-1 w inner after fending off determined charges by every other ride r
in the class. Gary Wolf p ushed the nose of his
Honda into second in moto one only to fall prey
to a decp rut in mo to two and finally DNF.
Suzuki-mo unted Robert Me rcie r managed to
keep his knobby hook ed up, and with a " take no
priso ner" attitude, rode to ~2 for second overall.
In Su nday's second round, Sawy er w a s
again a runaway 1-1 winner on his Honda, but
Blake Tirman p ushed him with a ~2 tally and
ea rned seco nd overa ll. Richard Miller, Mercier
and Cod y Dennes showed spa rks o f bri lliance in
both mo tos, but wi th some ru ts eating their front
whee ls, they had to settle for midpack fmishes.

Mashbir masters
Carson Valley Qualifier
By Scott Meyer
MINDEN, NY,OCT. 2
Eric Mashbi r's return to racing, follow ing a
badly broken femur a t the Virgin ia City GP last
May, proved successfu l. Th e Husqva rna pilo t
overcame a late-st art penalty to post the overall .
win a t the Ca rson Valley Qu alifier.
For the first time in se vera l years , the High
Sierra M.C.-p rom ot ed event was not a part of
the Na tiona l Ch ampionship Reliab ility Enduro
Series, though it will rejoin the series as a fullfledged "qualifier" in '94. It is typically the first
eve n t of th e fall season for Dis tric t 36
end ur o/ qualifier riders, but next year it will run
b efore the ISDE in th e spri ng , a nd will be
exten ded to a tw o-day even t.
Ear ly-morni ng temperat ures in the low 305
gree ted th e 250 entra nts, who headed off th e
sta rt , ou t thro ug h the Carson Valley Inn and
Douglas County Sheriff par king lots, and onto
th ree m iles of pa ved county road s . Mashbir's
day got off to ~ bad start when he failed to start
his 250cc Hu sky in the allotted 60 seconds .
"Af ter ge tting a star t pen alty first thing. I figured I was off to a grea t da y." joked the Cagiva

Mashbir. "I relaxed and tried to just ride consisten tly, as my leg is no t 1000/0 yet. I just wan ted to
fmish and not ge t hurt. In the first special test I
felt pretty good until I caught some slower riders ' dust and that, mixed with the early-morning
sun, gave me grave flashbacks of Virginia City ."
Mashbir shrugged off the negative thoughts
and navigated the 95 miles of high-desert washes, trails an d mining roads. At the fini sh, his
sp ecia l-tes t scores were fast e nough that he
overca me his early penalty and held the overall
lead. Secon d overall and right behind Mashbir
was Suz uki pilot Jon King, who had troubles of
his ow n in the first special test.
"The first test was bitchin' - fast, then tight,
then fast; it kep t you on your toes. Abou t th reequarters of the way thr ou gh it I bo iled my rear
brakes, and the last part of the test they ran us
d own a gna rly razor back ridge. At the bo ttom I
must ha ve been go ing 40 mil es an h our. The
only way I could stop wa s to pitch the bike and
my self into a tree . Subsequently, I lost 40 seconds deba rking myse lf and getting back on the
trail. I changed the bra ke nuid at the first gas
stop and the rest of the day went well. It's good
to see Eric back on the gas; he heals as fast as he
rid es!"
Mashbi r had a 17-secon d lead on King at the
home check, and wasn 't abou t to relinquish it in
the final mo to. He holeshot and won his moto
by 10 bike len gths, then follow ed that performance up with a win in the prestigious Dash for
Cash. The latter victory ea rned him $200.
