May scores championship at Midland IT By Grace Di Benedetto Photo By Gordon DeVries MIDLAND, MI, OCT. 10 Pat May had to wait until the last race of the season, but the Senior class ride r came away with the Michigan State Championship in the final IT of the season a t the Midland M/C track. The tightest points race of the season came down to the wire in the Senior class w ith Bob Russell and May being separated by only half a point for the number-one plate. At the start, Russell got the holeshot, but a lightning-fast Jack Warren flew by on lap two to take over the lead . May was next to d isplace Russell on lap four. Russell w as di splaced again on lap se ve n by John Zwerican, who was rid ing a borrowed 250 DTX Yamaha. By the end of the 15 laps , Warren had put 10 lengths on May , who had in tum put 20 lengths on John Zwerican. While May d idn't win the race, he had sewn up the district title with a four-and-a-half point lead over Russell. Canadian rider Doug Law rence cam e a long wa y to meet w it h the worst luck of the day. Lawrence' took the point out of the hole in the 50cc class but slid ou t in tum tw o on lap four . Lawrence recovered qu ickly and re-entered the ra ce before th e field p as sed h im b y. While Tomm y Link took over the lead, Lawr ence concentra ted on clo s ing the half-track di stance be tween h imself and th e lead er. On la p 10, Lawrenc e ou sted Logan Meyers from his secon d- pl ace po st, leaving only one more cha llenge. With four laps to go and a thr ee-second gap . to Tommy Link , Lawrenc e tucked down low and threw away the bra kes. As they en tered lap 11, the only obsta cle in his way proved not to be Link but his own bike. The Italajet quit in tum tw o and cou ld n' t be res tarted, leav ing a very . disapp ointed Lawre nce on the side lines wa tching as the race passed him by. Varnell victorious atTecate IX Trial By Don Williams 34 PINE VALLEY, CA. OCT. 3 In a ba ttle of nerves, Steven Varnell rode his Fantic 305 to a narrow two-point Sportsman B win a t the San Diego Trials Rid ers' Tecate IX Tria l at the Cora l Canyon OHV area . Varnell was tied with Brad Pr ic e, Rob Thornton and Rick Cavataio with pe rfect clean loop s after the first lap around the du sty cou rse. Right behind the pack, w ith a single dab w as Peter Thatcher, who carried a seven-event win streak into th is ninth round of the Ameri can Tria ls Association Championsh ip Series. With the temperatures ap p roac hi ng tri ple d ig it s under a su n n y, br eeze-free s ky, th e teenaged Varnell's stamina sta yed w ith him, and he completed another dab- free loop. Thornton stayed closest, with a single dab on the middle lap , w hile Price and Cavataio dropped three po ints. Varnell finally let his foot touch the ground in a section on the last loop . By then, it was too late for anyone to catch him, as Thornton dabbed twice in a sect ion, movin g him in to a third place position behind Price, who finished the day w it h 29 cleans and three po ints, all scored in one section. Th at cher st alled his Aprilia Climber in a section on his second loop for five points, then u sed a cl ean loop to advance from sixth to fourth . Ano ther low-point b a t tl e ensued in th e Novice B d ivision . The top four ride rs fmished w ithin three po ints of each other. Shawn Pickett took a one-dab lead over Keimy Blake and Jim Boswell on the first loop and never relinquis hed it. Pickett built on his lead with a clean second loop, finishing with tw o p oints . As th e event go t und erway , it was soo n appa rent wh o was going to be battling for the overall hon ors as Mich ael Laffer ty pin ned his KX250 th rough the first trail section to drop a seve n minutes, 44 seconds though his brother, Jack Lafferty [r ., was ho t on h is heel as he traversed the tight techn ical terr ain to d rop eigh t flat at the check. Next thro ugh with a compa rable time would be Denn is Z u rawski, w ho drop ped 8.34 with Husqvarna factory star Hin es upholding NETRA hon ors with a score of 9.05 thr ou gh the section. Zeros and several single-point late penalties would high light the front-runners'· score cards until those rid ers cha llenged the fam ous "Rock Garden" and the subseq uent time-breaker check afterw ards. Lafferty wo uld carry h is momentum through this particular section with a score of 3.10. Lafferty continued h is steady do mina nce by blistering through tha t very technic al section of the event, d ropping only a score of six while his rival contenders all d ropped a score of seven. A t the 13th check , Hines inadv ertently bumed the section which netted his scorecard a Tom Skethway (4) and Mike McKee (99) battled at T rail -Way Speedway. very costly two po ints wh ile his contenders for the win all zeroed the same p iece. It wou ld be a d ifferent story at the end of the section as all the leader s would drop points, but it wo uld be Lafferty once again bettering all his pursuers. At the finish of the event, it was a very happy Lafferty who claimed his first Little Rhody win with a score of 29, and more importantly, continued to pull away from his brother, Jack, in the overa ll ECEA series standings. Sweeten won the 600cc A and Veteran classes while Price took the 600cc Pro and Spo rtsman classes for the secon d-straight wee k. Also ta king the same twoclass wins as the previou s Sund ay 's race were Tom Skethway in the 200cc a nd 250cc B class, and Corey Ho rmes in the 55cc (7-8) a nd 65cc classes. Clarence Bull agai n took the 750cc A class, wh ile Paul Lynch took the 250cc A. John Winsett ad ded h is nam e to the long list of 600cc B winners a nd Donnie Mullen battled Pa u l Allison for the 85cc wi n. Sweeten 's win in the first feature was made mu ch easie r wh en his se ason long nem es is, Warren Diem, went ou t on the ope ning lap with transmission troubles. Following Sweeten were Nick Taylor, Lowell Wherley, and Paul Lyn ch. Lynch moved up to challenge for second, taking con trol of it by the third lap and leaving Taylor a nd Wherl ey to ba ttle Ph il Libha rt an d Tod d Winsett for thi rd tha t went to Libhart ove r Taylo r in the late laps . In the Veteran class, Sweeten gr abbed the lead from Taylor White, Diem and Wherley with th e only ch ange being Clarence Bull ta king fourth on the third lap . As he d id last we ek , Price jumped out in front at the green light and never relinquished the lead in the Sportsman final. Edd ie Hidden, Jim H olli st er a n d Rob Maje ski foll owed but stayed in the same ord er on the hard , slick, nar row-groove track. In the Pro class, Hidden, riding his best races ever here, again took second , wi th Majeski third. Majeski tried too hard to get und er Hidden starting the third lap, and ended up facing the rest of the field as they entered the first turn. Arlington Suz uk i( MSR-ba cke d Hoen sh ell mad e his series debu t; putting togeth er a solid effort, but Steve Cardwell was ready to battle. These two, along with Clifford Goe rtz, proved to be the fastest rid ers of the da y. Hoensh ell had a one-minute lead by lap five, yet Cardwell was ba ttling with Goe rtz for seco nd . By lap seven, Hoen sh ell ha d tw o minutes on Ca rdwell and one minute more on Goertz . Lap n ine saw Hoen sh ell pit 'a n d Cardwell race into the lead . Hoe ns hell, then back by four seconds and on the last lap, turn ed up the gas and put it in overd rive . Reeling in Ca rdwell, Hoenshe ll took the checke red with a fifteen second adv antage . Goe rtz round ed ou t the top three some three minu tes back. "The Scrambl ers lay out a challenging course whi ch is fun, yet techn ical." Hoensh ell said. Drane, on a CRSOO, foug ht off a t least six riders to gather the overall prize. Drane's biggest challenge ca me from Ber t Reyn old s, wh o held the ove rall lead early in the race. Ridin g with a cracked tailbon e, Reyn old s slowed little to take se venth ove ra ll and thir d Ope n A. Another rider to chall enge was 250 B rider Sea n McKay.
