Brown on top at Daniel Boone Motocross McCann does at Starwest MX By G w e n n Harris MORENO VAU.EY, CA,OCT. 2 Ken McCann put his Kennelli Racing Kawasa ki into the winner's circle, taking the first 30+ moto by storm and chalking up a third in the second moto during the Starwest Saturday N ight under the Stars series. In the first moto, McCann carne ou t of th e starting ga te 'smoking and led the pack through tum one. Riding in his du st were Mike Dunlap and Dan McClinlock with the res t of the pa ck only a sho rt distance back. Dunl ap ma de a move for the lead as the pair scream ed down the back straigh taway, but McCann, hold ing the throttle for a single second longer, held on to the lead . This seemed to insp ire McCann to pick up the pace a notch . The rest of the race was a bene fit for McCann as hi s teammate Dunlap h ad a secure hold on second and Terry MacRae was in control of third, with Dan McClintock and Tim Hu nziker rounding out the top five. Moto two wa s a tOlally di fferent story, as Dunlap grabbed the hol esh ot wi th Hun ziker, Kelly McGui re, and MacRae in tow. McClintock was on the m ~v e afte r a mi d ~ pac k s tart as he d ispl aced MacRa e and closed o n H u nz ike r. During the second lap, Hu nziker got a little wild in the far-end comer, allow ing both MacRae an d McClinlock by. Hunziker doubled his way back into the top five by pa ss ing Dunlap a nd then taking third away from McGuire The Kawasaki rider wa s on the gas and made his first-eve r altem p l a t the "Twi n Peaks " double ju mp a successfu l one , closin g on the battle for lhe lead between McClin tock and MacRae. Hu nzike r mad e a move on McClintock in the back sectio n, po we ring by the Yamaha rider in to t he number tw o pos it ion and th en passed MacRae for the lead by ju mp ing up an d over him. Once out front, the battle for second heated up as McClintock and MacRae began bu mp ing a nd pushing one ano t her . This re sulted in MacRae makin g a ma jor bo bble, allowing not only McClintock by but also McCann , who haC: bee n makin g up lost positions late in the moto. The white flag cam e out for a happy Hunziker. He had repeatedly made the "Twi n Peaks " do uble jump during the race and was happ ier about that than winning the moto. The Kawasa ki pilot took an un even tful final lap along with the win. It was McCann, how ever, w ith the big smile on his face as he followed second p lace finish er McClintock across the checkered, knowing his first moto w in coupled w ith h is second mot o thir d would earn him the overall win. In the 30+ Beginner cla ss Johnny Jack son took the overa ll victory with a 1-2 moto. By David Procida lDNOON, KY,OCT. 3 Mike Brown bounced back from two bad starts to score the overall victories in both the 125cc A classes at th e Daniel Boone Motocr oss Park, Brown also won the 250cc A class. In the firs t 125cc A molo, Honda-mounted Brown took the holesh ot and lapped the track in a very fast two minutes and on e second. but midway through the secon d lap he got sid ew ays at the bott om of the long uphill section. This was all Brad Strunk needed to catch up, and on lap three the two rode nearly side by sid e as Brown recovered from his near spill. By the fourth lap, Brown began 10 pull ahead an d had gained a six-second lead over Strunk, which increased to 29 seconds by the end of the grueling 2o-minule moto. The second moto of the 125cc A class began with more pr obl em s for Brown, who is sp an· sored by Jim's Moto rcycle Sales of Johnson City , Tennessee . Jeff May took the lead out of the gal e as Brown flew off his Honda, p lanting his face firmly in the dirt. Strunk was really jam ming as he came up behind May a nd passed him on the steep downhill. Brown, meanwhile, was mov ing up throu gh the slowe r riders. By the third lap he was righl beh ind Strunk and kept com ing on fasl As they enl ered the curve after clearing the big tabletop, Brown too k the inside line, taki ng Stru nk with a te xt boo k pass. Ijfow n built a strong lead after claiming first pos ition and easi· Iy wo n the moto. Just as easily, Brown also led all 17 laps of the 250cc A class to cla im tha t overall victory as well. When the gale d rop p ed for the first co mbined +40 Expert and +35 Intermediate moto, it was +4O-class rid er Geo rge Koller who got the ju m p o n the fiel d and led the w ay o n to the famo us course.
