on the 50 ya rd line was McBride , Diem and John Lewis . McBride got a good start and worked his way into into four th entering turn one. Diem was on the insid e of Lewi s but got to far sidewa ys, found one of the holes, and high-s ided to the tra ck su rface and ou t of conten tion . On the following circu it McBride mo ved pa st thr ee of th e fou r fro nt-ru nne rs an d foc used on lea d er Ric k Sec ool ish. Th ro ug h la ps two a n d th ree McBrid e found the track su rface rough enough to convince him that ano the r line needed to be taken if he was going to beat Secoolish . Out of tum four McBride took the high road , and o n the back stra ight went by Secoolish and into first for the win. Meanwhile, Lewis had been funning down Secoolish for seco nd, and he got by only inch es before th e finish line. Scratch victories were on the cho pping bloc k as five-ti me Division Two winner Secoolish was unsea ted by Gene Wilma rth , who led from start to fin ish for his firs t win in on ly tw o appear· an ces a t Champion Speedway. Ferry flies at Ona MX By Steve Reeves DNA, FL, AUG.22 Timmy Ferry rail ed to both Pro mot o wins on this sp ra wling sou th centra l Florida tra ck after recovering from poor starts in both motos. Mota one sa w Vince Devan e and Rick Perry lead th e p ack through tum one with Devan e ' pu lling the ea rly lead after pu lling off spec tacular lea ps th ro ug h the do ub les and rock er sections . Ferry was soon rip ping through the pack with abandon. By the ha lfwa y point Devane sta rting having engine problems, and Ferry slid by to eas ily win the mote followed by Devane and Perry. In moto two Deva ne took the holeshot again with Perry carrying Ferry wid e. As the mota got un d erway it wa s De va ne, Pe rry, Bryan Abel. Tim Baker, Ferry and John Choate followed by Mark Beamer an d Mike Bragg . Devane tried to extend his lead before Ferry cou ld get thr ou gh the pack, but by the fourth lap Ferry was knocking on the door. The pair swap ped the lead sev era l times un til Ferry mad e oil pass stick through the roc kers. Devane laid back to try and lea rn Ferry's lin es, th en m ounted a ch a rge to p u ll within a bike length of Ferry . As Devane moved to the ins ide he lost the fron t end a nd fell. Fer ry motored to the overa ll, followed by Deva ne and Per ry. O ther action saw Beth Ruiz totally dominate th e Women ' s cla ss, ta kin g bo th motos. Th e " race" was for second, and Tammy Higgins finished ah ead of her sister-in-law Julie Higgins. Afte r Ju lie fell in the rockers, Tammy tu rned on the afterburners and pu lled a hu ge lead . Procida SAN BERNARDINO, CA, AUG. 28 Danny Woodard proved that he is qu ite cap able of handling a 250cc mach ine as he cap tured the 2S0cc Novice cla ss a t round one o f the 16th Annual California Racing Club's Tri- Race Series held at th e well -groomed Gle n H elen racing fa cility in San Be rnardino. Eve n th e weather took a breather from the unu sua lly hot mu ggy climate, which has been around since the AMA National, to give the racers a comfortably wann beautiful day. The trilck h.:l d seen mi nor changes since the 125/250 Pro AMA race, and all the racers were looking forw ard to getting their wheels dirty on the Nat ional-ccllibcr co urse. W oodard had burro wed hi s da d 's KX250 after his 125 Suz u ki could n' t be repaired in time for th e se ries . Jimm ie Deeve r came through turn tw o with Wood ard , Dan "Sky· King a nd then Bush ey leadin g the large pack of riders around the front sect ion of the track. As th e riders headed towa rds th e ba c k sect ion Dee ver backed off the pace drasti cally, gi ving up the lead to Woodard who had King hou nding him as they went up the big up hill sweeper. Th e two rem a ined lock ed in a tight battle up until they h it th e long d o ubl e in front of the gr an dstand. Woodard clea red the p air of jumps cleanly, bu t Coo k ca me up sho rt , a lmos t stopping hi s Yamaha in its tracks. Th is ga ve Woodard some breathing roo m for th e nex t couple of laps . Meanwhile, back in the pack, Mar k Higha m and Mike Mau te we re working the m asses as they made their way up the ranks. Higham had worked his way up to fourth by mid race and was breathing down King 's neck. One lap lat er third belonged to Hi gh am . One more la p a nd Wooda rd mad e his firs t error, grabb ing a han d ful of th rot tle as he exited a hairpin tum a nd sendi ng the big KX in a full 36{}-degree spin. Wood ard recovered pe rfectly, ma king the mishap look alm ost in ten tional, a nd held onto the lead onl y giving up a few bike len gths. Woodard took the white flag on the next lap a nd manag ed to pu ll away from Co ok as he mad e h is fi nal lap around the challenging course. Coo k finished a lonely second as there wa s a gap back to Higham in th ird . Rounding ou t the top five were King and Maute. As the rid ers funnelled down into the first turn for mot o two th e ho lesh o t be lo nged to Hi gham, bu t hi s lead was s ho rt- li ve d as Wood ard used the long do uble jump to fly up a nd ove r Higham int o the lead. Brad Sch u ltz a nd Deever we re next, followed by Mau te and Bushey. Deeve r was on the gas and bega n to reel in Schultz as Maute pulled to the side of the track to check on a possible problem with his KTM, and then rejoined the race a few moments later. Up front, Woodard go t squi rrelly in th e same corner that had given hi m problems in the fir st mota , a ll o w ing High am to cl ose in . Woodard went wid e and cli pped a ha y bale, sta lling his KX, and H igham took ove r the lead . Schu ltz had taken over second before Wood ard res tarted the KX, but once underway Woodard beg an to reel in Schultz's Suzuki. W ith th e o vera ll v ic to ry o n the line, Wood ard rocketed a round the back section of the track. Woodard wasn 't the only rider ha ving problems th is mot o as Deev er 's Yam aha disintegra ted a wheei after goi ng through the do ubles, ending an im p ress ive charge . It took tw o lap s befor e Wooda rd had closed in on Schul tz, bu t once he did , th e Su zuk i rid er d id hi s best to block the KX rider. Woodard backed off to check out Sch ultz's lines, a nd th en just af ter the big tabletop dove to the in si d e for a clea n pass, mov ing into seco nd . High am hadn't been wa iting for Woodard to get by Schultz and had buil t an insurmou ntab le gap to take the wi n , bu t it was Wood ard's 1-2 moto scores that gave hi m the overall victory in his firs t race aboa rd a 250.
