Manchester thrills at Speedway USA By Tom Thoma s VlGORVlLLE, CA,AUG. 21 Defend ing National Speed way Champion, Chris Manchester he ld off a cha rging Mike Faria to win his third Scratch main even t of the season at Spee d way USA. The d uo took the chec kered flag sepa rated by inches after peg-to-p eg comba t that had the crowd going w ild. The ever-p resen t co ntin gent of Fari a fa ns had not seen th ei r favorite on the w inne r's pod iu m th is season at Victorville, and Manch ester was d etermined to keep it tha t way as he held Faria off at the str ipe to co llec t th e w in. Behind th e lead ers, Andy North rup and Steve Lucero waged a bat tle of their own with No rthrup taking thir d at the line. Faria won the Handicap main follo wed by Gary Ac k royd and North r up . In the Ju nio r Speedway First Divisio n main even t, Steven Dow ning came out on top followed by Brando n Mitchell and Jimmy Fishback . Patr ick Donovan captured the Second Division main . . In the Sidecar ma in event it was side-by-side ra cin g a t its bes t as th e Yamah a team of Matherson and Leeder survived a mid-race battle with McIntyre and Ketcham to take top honors. . Butler again at Lawrenceburg By Joh n Spurrier LAWRENCEBURG, IN, AUG. 27 Mike Butle r and Sam Lowe charged in to an ea rly batt le over firs t place in the Pro-Am featu re wit h Butle r taking co n trol at th e end of lap one. Butler stretched his lead out finishing the race s ix bike lengths ahead of Lowe. Lowe he ld on to second place despite pressu re by Curt Sne lling in the last few lap s. Snelling took t hird fo ll o w ed by Luther All en a nd Ron . Gard ner. Bob Brown charged to an early lead in the Open A feature and never looked back on his way to the win. Sam Lowe, in third place at the end of lap one , took second place awa y from Marvin Gard ner on the second lap and then p roceeded to run down the lead er, closing to one bike length at the finis h. Behind them Dickie Good win and Luther Allen put on torrid bat tle for fourth place, running side by side for several laps before Allen claimed the position for good. In the 250cc fea ture Bran don Rose gra bbe d the early lead only to be passed by Joe Bastin going in to tum one on the second lap. Lowe go t off the line in fourth place, took the third spot from Phillip Wolf on lap th ree and go t un d er Rose in tum four of the fourth lap to take over secon d place. Bastin, Lowe and Rose held their positions to the finish followed by Wolf and Jeff Tatte rson. Rose led the 125
