; EVENTS As the clock star ted to tick awa y Couse had wo rked his way aro und the slowe r rid ers and began to desce nd on the leaders. Gosselaa r was Couse's firs t victim as he followed the you ng rider for two laps un til he made his move. Once past Cosselaa r, Cou se would meet up with the lead er, Neitzel, and the two riders would fight to the e nd . The wi n ner of the grueling race was n't dec ided until the last lap . Couse followed Neitzel aro und like a do g on a leash, and when the tim e ca me he br ok e free to ta ke the lead. When th e t w o rid er s came up o n la p p e rs, N eitze l ha d to sl ow as he a pp roa ched th e "Coope r Clicker," and Co use seized the moment to jump past for the lead. Cou se crossed the line fir st w it h a d isa p p o in ted Ne it ze l in secon d C osselaa r trailed in third . Du ring th e 125cc Beg inner cla ss Richard Stewart was ted littl e tune as he took an ea rly lead and p roceed ed to pass the ent ire field after starting on the second row. Bryan Lamborn held the seco nd spot ea rly in the race befo re go ing down and giving the spo t to Scot t Lockwood . Lockwoo d held second until the end of the race. Bryan McCorm ick rod e a strong race to gra b third p lace. Resu lts e Bob Palaeids (63X) and Tom Leone (310) dic ed at Gl en Helen MX. he wou ld tak e the overa ll when he conv incingly won the 2nd moto, but it was Garin Frost overcom ing heat , cras hes and the relentless pursuit of 22 other motocrossers to capture the win. Moto one sta rt ed with a do-or-d ie battle between early leader, Rick O'Brien, Frost, Danny Derwingson and Brian Pane. White was back in the pack and mov ing up . O'Brien threw his bike aw ay in the rou gh, sandy back sectio n and gave up his lead to Frost who was being hounded by Derwingson . Al so o n th e mov e was Manny Manu suthakis who looked to be a factor unt il he took a major soil sa mp le while tryin g to overcome a malfuncti oning p ow er v alv e. Slip pn g into fourth was Pane wi th Whit e char ging hard. Afte r se vera l ba r-bangin g la ps, O 'Brien jus t cou ldn't see m to ge t by Frost, and the tw o finis hed in that order. Derwingson , Pa ne a n d White rounded out the top five. Moto tw o w as White a ll the w a y as he holeshot the first tum a nd never looked back. If he had, though, he would have seen no less than four riders within a few seconds of him for the en tire race. Fros t and Manusuthakis duked it o ut for most of the moto tryi ng to occupy that second spo t while O'Brien and Derw ing son hammered each other for fourt h. The rough Hollister track made it di fficult to pass, and a lot of faster rid er s were stuck behi nd others . When all the di rt se ttled it was Frost hold ing on for seco nd o ve r Manusuthakis, and O 'B rien o u tlas ting Derwi ngton . Wit h th e m ixed resul ts in mot o two, Frost' s 1-2 score was good eno ugh for the overall. By winning moto two , White took a we ll deserved second overall. The 125cc Novice class wa s anoth er wild affair as Den ni s Sta pleton ho les hot mo to one an d he ld on to the lead for the e nt ire ra ce . Pressuring Stapl eton, though, was Keith Verdin who tried several tim es to make the pa ss, b ut Stapleto n was too smooth through the tu rns and held him off. Ryan Brink looked like the spo iler as he pushed Verdin thro ughout the mot o, even getting by once or tw ice, but time ran out, Ieaving h im in th ir d . Moto two w as a no th e r Staple ton hol eshot, but thi s time Ve rd in a nd Brink was ted no time in ge tting by to put on a show of their own. As the flag d ropped for the dea dengine start, HDK-backed Ch ris Neitzel shot out in front of the high p itched mob of mini riders. Only four riders com ple ted all eight grue ling 27-mile laps. Ten riders comp leted se ve n laps, 18 riders covered s ix lap s and anot her group of 18 covered only five Japs. Th e event wa s slated as a tea m race even thou gh some rid ers decided to tackle it alone. Each team was allow ed as man y riders as they
