Hilliard again jumped ou t front at the start of moto two , only this time it was Newton hot in pu rs ui t ahead of William s and Womack. Moto one winner Green gated poorly and was just ou t of the top five. Hilliard and Newton went at it tooth-and -natl for the first couple of laps in a very ph ysical battle. The tw o riders even came together in midflight off a big downhill ski jump, which sent Newton on a slight detour off the track . New ton lost his concentration after the tangle and was unable to gel things back together, and dropped jus t out of the top five. Williams mad e the best of New ton' s tro ubles and went to wo r k o n H ill ia rd up fron t. Green 's Su zuki RMl25 was sm oking as he came slicing through the field to catch up to the lead pair of Williams and Hilliard. Williams had made the move just in time for the lead and p ut Hilliard between himse lf and Green, so by the tim e Green worked his wa y by, the race was his tory. Williarns went on to take the win and overall . Green's stro ng moto rides netted him the runner-up spot on the da y ahea d of moto tw o third place fini sher Womack . H ill ia rd stayed consistent to take fourth for the day over Newton. North Carolina mini ace Stephen Martin easily walked away w ith both moto wins in the 50cc Pee Wee cla ss with th e s a me s tyle that earned him the AMA Amateur National Title in the 50cc 7-year-old class at Loretta Lynns jus t a w ee k e arlier. When the riders lined up it was John Grant on the 10, Will Whiteside on the 20, and Mike Kain on the 30. Bob Collier and Bobby Hedden were on the 40 along wi th Bart Bast, who started from the SO. Grant went into the comer first follo wed by Whiteside a nd Kain . Collier went down in the first comer. Grant took the checkered flag about six bike lengths ahead of Whit esid e, wh o came in second . Bast was unable to impr ove his position an d finished third . Grant has finished in the top three severa l times this yea r, but this was his first win of the season. The Scratch main field included Bast on the p ole, Dustin Schroeder in the num ber two gate, Bob Hicks in th e nu m be r three p osition and Hedden on the outside. Bast was first in to the co rner follow ed by Hic ks and Hedden on the outside. Schroed er stayed on the pole a nd was ab le to come ou t corner in second place. Hed den mainta ined a n outside line an d passed Hicks and Schroeder on the back stra ight. He was riding extre me ly h ar d and it a p peared as if he migh t pass Bast too. Howeve r, he cou ld n't find enough traction on the outside and Schroeder eventually regained second p lace. Bast took the checkered flag first followed by Schroeder in second and Hedden in third.
