The Vet Beginner class had a few surprises , as newcomer Robert Roeh lk rocke ted in to th e lead in the first mo to, follow ed closel y by Ed McBride and Floyd Craft on . By the midpoint of th e m oto, Cra fton m ana g ed to ge t aro u n d McBride and went after Roehlk who had opened up a sizable lead , on ly to ha ve time ru n out. Moto two had McBride and Roehlk d ueling fiercely for the lead early on with Cra fton a nd Sta n Sla te in the w ings . The rou gh Ho lliste r track grabbed Roeh lk's fron t whee l, putting him on the ground just as he was making a move tb take the lead from McBride. Bennett, Bast post Auburn Speedway wins By Scott Rousseau AUBURN, CA,JUNE 25 Bart Bast and Ke lly Bennett took advan tage of the dry-slick condition of Aub urn's Fas t Frida ys Speedway to post w ins in th e Scratch and Handicap mains, respectively. The Handicap ma in even t saw Bennett lined up on the lo-yard line, a penalty he had earned for winning last week's Handicap main from the zero. Benne tt wa s followed by Allen Krause on th e 20 , Bob C o ll ie r on th e 30 a n d Du stin Schroe de r on the 40. Bart Bast and Jim Sisemo re lined up on th e 50. Bennett too k ad vanta ge of his starting posi tio n to gra b the lead wh en the tapes went up, but Kra use a ntici pa ted the gate and ca ug h t Bennett in turn one before losi ng gro und in turn two. Sisemore a nd Bast we re frantic in their efforts to ma ke u p posi tions on the track, w ith Bast sticki ng to the pole look ing for mi s ta ke s f rom the rid e rs a head , a nd Sise mo re e xp e rtm entln g w ith th e v irt ua lly nonexistent di rt line . Sisemor e was able to ge t by Sch roeder before the checke red flag fell. Bast also went to the outs ide to get Schroede r, who was really st ruggling to get his GM to hook up on the groove. Up front, Kraus e mounted ano ther charg e on Ben n e tt, closin g up on his re ar wheel as the white flag waved. Kraus e 's chances evaporated when lie slid un dern ea th Bennett in tu m one, pa rked , and was forced to lay the bike down . Bennett cru ised acr oss th e fin ish line to win his seco nd-straight Ha ndicap main ahead of a conservative Collie r, Sisemore, Bast, Schroeder and a very disa ppo inted Krause. Although the advantage wou ld belo ng to the r id er w ith th e b est s ta rt, the Scratch mai n promised to be a very d ose contest. L.1St week's w inne r, Jesse Ochoa, was back to defend his title from gate two while weekl y Scra tch main contender s Bast and Sis em ore were in thre e an d four . A much im pro ved Dustin Schroed er drew the po le for his first Scratch main appearance in weeks. Wh en the tapes went up it was Bast on the point into tum one with Ochoa in his shadow .
