Winner Toby Lopez (130) and Mike Chavez (13) led the pack to tum one at StarwesL SAN BERNARDINO, CA, MAY 23 Craig Adams bla:z.ed around the course at Glen Helen Raceway to take the Open class win and maintain his points lead in the SRA Grand Prix Series. Don Suitor, president of Southland Racing Association, laid out a challenging course, which some racers described as fast, and others described as rough. The racers ran backwards from the normal direction on the MX course, which gave an interesting shape to some of the double jumps. One who would subscribe to the "rough" theory was Jeff Haase, who finished second in the Open race. His frame broke on the final lap, after he gave Craig Adams a run ,through most of the race. [n the 250cc division, series leader Mike Shoemaker, on his first ride back after a dislocated shoulder, trailed Eric Smith for half the race. He passed Smith and began to stretch out a lead, only to retire with throttle trouble with three laps remaining. "Shoemaker was pushing me from behind," said Smith. "He could have passed me any time." Danny Sanchez broke in the course in style in the combined Senior/Super Senior/Women's class, which ran in the opening race of the day. Sanchez swept around the pack in the first tum to beat everyone to the first jump. Sanchez maintained his lead all the way to the finish line. Scott Highland and Brian Fountain provided exciting racing in the Vet Novice/Beginner race, battling all the way. Just before the finish, Fountain tried to steal the win by passing Highland in a tight turn at the end of a fast straight. Highland was able to get back around in the next tum, however, just in time to take the checkered flag. Steven Heredia led the Vet Ama leurs for a good while, then faded back. The win was taken by Lyle Crawford, with Mike Shoemaker taking the Vet Expert victory. Results 200: t. Patrid: McEluogue; 2. Billy NicolJ; 3. Jake Jouman; 4. Dristin Dalley; S. Ed ViteUi, 250: I. Mosher PALMYRA, NY, MAY 23 Chris Coleman, making a rare appearance on a District 4 track, won three classes and sent the rest of the experts home wishing he'd stayed away at Palmyra MX Park. Coleman's wins came in the 125cc, Open and +25 Expert classes. [n the 125cc Expert class' first moto, Billy Silvarole flew out of the gate and had a threebike lead by the first comer. By the end of the first lap, it was clear this was going to be a twobike race, with Silvarole leading and Coleman closing in fast. Coleman tried every trick in the book to get by and with one lap left, got under and around Silvarole. Not wanting to settle for second, Silvarole squared the last corner and took the win by less than two feet. In moto two, Silvarole once again took the holeshot, only to have Coleman push his way into first place in a short left-right comer. The two held position until Coleman went down in lapped traffic. Silvarole jumped at his chance and took over the lead. With only one comer and about 75 feet to the finish, Silvarole went down, giving the moto and overall wins to Coleman. Silvarole took second in the moto and second overall with Bruce Stratton third. In the Open Expert class, Brian Austin rode his SllOcc Kawasaki to a second-place overall, trading moto wins with Coleman, who earned the win. A surprising Justin Berg beat out Bruce Stratton for third. Bob and Dave Ragaisis finished first and second overall, respectively, in the SeniOr C class, with Howard Baker rounding out the top three. Doug Retterer continues to dominate every class he enters. He look both moto wins in the Senior Mini class, with Casey Higgins second and Heath Wadhams finishing third. In the 125cc B Schoolboy class, Retlerer once again ran away in both motos, looking very smooth in every tum. Josh Rizzo finished a distant second with Vamaha-mounted Jeff Lanieu taking third. Retlerer, in the 125cc Amaleur class, finally had a little challenge from Mark VanNorman, who was able to stay close and at one point led for a brief moment until Retterer railed a deep berm and recaptured the lead for good, taking the overall win. VanNorman, a very close second, left Josh Rizzo off the pace in third.. Junior Mini 85cc class action saw the Kawasaki of Adam Bourne take the overall win in convincing style, with Aaron Dieter in second and Bob Silvarole rounding out the top three. Results 51: I.
