Coleman, Stull pacesetters at Broome-TIoga By Richard DeLibertis BINGHAMTON, NY, MAY 16 Chris Coleman was the overall winner in both the 125 and 250cc Expert classes at the BroomeTioga Sports Center, which finally got to hold a race after three previous events were canceled. Over 260 riders lined up for what was to be a full schedule of racing. Coleman encountered resistance from Stratton in the 2SOcc class. The second moto saw Stratton lead Coleman in a tight race. Heading into the closing laps, when setting up for tum one, Stratton did his best to out-brake Coleman, only to lose control and overshoot the berm. Coleman went by and was not contested from that point on. Displaying an equally impressive amount of domination in his classes was Derek Stull. Stull was a runaway victor in the 125cc Amateur class, and in the Collegeboy competition. In the Collegeboy class, pressure was applied by Sean Skulnik and Nick Van Praag. Stull's closest rival in the 12Scc class was Anthony Pavia. Bruce Stratton Sr. ruled the Super Senior division all day. Results 50: 1. Mitch Dougherty> 2. 8.}. Smith: 3. Dennis Gelatt: 4. Behrens battles to Aztalan Motocross win LAKE MILlS, WI, MAY 9 Kawasaki-mourited Bob Behrens was the cream of the crop at Aztalan Cycle Park's first motocross of the season as he swept all four motos of the 125 and 250cc A classes. Over 530 riders showed up, many to learn the track which will host the Regional Youth Qualifier, and others just for the race itself, but all were treated to great racing and, for the most part, excellent weather. Chad Liebergen was the first leader of the day by stealing the holeshot in the first moto of .the 12Scc Junior class. By the end of the lap, he had Chris Jensen, Jason Schiller and Ken Soulier on his tail. Lap two saw both Jensen and Schiller get by Liebergen. By the end of the moto, Soulier had also gollen around Liebergen, following Jensen and Schiller back to the checkers for third. Moto two saw Jensen attempt to continue his winning ways by taking the early lead with Soulier on his tail. Soulier took him on the second lap and held on for the win; Jensen and Schiller took second and third. Steve Judge took the early lead in the Vet A class ahead of an aggressive Jim Heilman. Heilman was working his Honda hard enough Bruce Stratton (85) led Chris Coleman in 250cc Expert action at Broome-Tioga. to clear the quasi double just past the flag stand, but it wasn't enough to catch Judge. The second moto began as a carbon copy of the first with Heilman trailing Judge around, until Heilman Tan into some trouble on lap two, dropping him back to seventh. Chuck Kingstad put in an inspiring ride, moving from ninth on the first lap to second behind Judge at the flag. The first Vet B class saw Doug Hay and Glenn Scherr swap mota wins with a consistent Joe Carlino snaring a couple of thirds. HarleyDavidson ace Scott zampach traded in his street leathers for some Kevlar and nylon to claim a couple of moto wins in the second Vet class. Mike Boyden took second overall with a second and a third, while Brad Leet went 6-1 for third. Scoll Hicks motored away with his holeshot of the first Masters moto. Hicks dismounted in the back part of the course, letting Jeff Melcher and Ron Walker by. Melcher and Walker kept motoring as they held on to take first and second. Walker jumped to the early lead in moto two, snaring the holeshot with Tony Tamborino and Lyle Wheeler on his tail. In the time of a lap, Doug Forslner and Hicks, in sixth only a lap earlier, worked by both Tamborino and Wheeler. At this point, things settled down with Walker taking the win, followed by Forslner and Hick. Fritz Huebner grabbed the holeshot of the +40/+50 combined Senior class with Terry Woosley on his big four-stroke Husky. Woosley gol by Huebner on the first lap and started cruising. The man to watch was Jerry Bumgardner, who after a poOr start worked up to pass Jim Ricci for fourth on lap two. While Woosley cruised out front, Bumgardner carefully stalked and passed Mike Gaborsky' first and then Huebner on lap three. If Woosley had mirrors on his Husky, they would have been full of Bumgardner as he was all over him at the finish. Woosley held for the win. The second moto again was Bumgardner in the second position, this lime following Wayne Cornelius home. Results P/W; 1. T..d TryTiI (Yam); 2. Brad Modjewski (lIj); 3. Brian Glowacki (yam); 4. Faria flies at Lake Perris Spdwy By Elaine Jones Photo by Jim Thorn PERRIS, MAY 20 The infamous Harley Races brought the crowd to Lake Perris Speedway Thursday night, and they got to see some great speedway action as well, as Mike Faria scored the win in the Scratch main event The Shoei/Oilzall/Scott/Terrycable-sponsored Faria was in top form as.he got the pole by the luck of the draw, and with it the hole:;hot. It was a wire-w.wire romp for the former National champ. Charlie Venegas got off second, but Scott Brant had claimed the spot by the second lap. John Aden rounded out the field in fourth. After a four-year layoOff, Mike Mazzacane picked up all the marbles in the Handicap main. There was a bad moment when George Fox and Jerry Black tangled in tum one, with both riders going down hard. Fox was able to make the restart, but Black was too shaken up to continue. When McConnell ran into problems in turn three, kissing the dirt, it was clear sailing for Aden in second. Billy Hamill came from the 50yard line for third. Mission Yamaha/Larry Jacinto/m/Morn's Cycle Yamaha-sponsored Dale Leeder and Ross Millar had a good night in the Sidecar class. They went three-for-three, capping the evening with a come-from-behind win. Dean Steele and Dwayne King got the holeshot, but two laps later Leeder and Millar had things well in hand. Dirk Gardner and Doug Lynch came away with third. . 11 was an easy win for Randy Fannin in the Support main. Pau' Colston was off second, but Joe Erhardt rained on his parade as he came from fourth to second in one lap. Bryan Buffington picked up third. Results SCRATCH: 1. Mike Faria (Jaw); 2. Gray shines at Pine Ridge Enduro entry and 104 miles of trails without a bobble. Those trails took the riders across the pine-eovered hi1Js of northwestern Nebraska, occasionally free-falling the hapless contestants into the diabolical ravines that vein the area. The near-perfect conditions must have seemed like heaven to Gray after spending the winter months contesting in the National Championship Hare & Hound Series. The unaccustomed lush setting was evidently not a distraction, as the Yamaha-mounted Gray was the only ride showing nothing but zeroes through the first five checks. His score of two was also the fastest lime at check six. At checks number seven and eight, RMEC (Rocky Mountain Enduro Gub) and lSDE veteran Chris Willbanks upped the ante when he cleaned the sections compared to Gray's debit of one minute per check. Bothr riders zeroed the next two checks before each dropping three minutes through the mud bogs of the final section. Their final tally was seven points apiece with Gray triumphing by 19 seconds on the tiebreakers. Third overall went to freshman 250cc A rider Donnie Book who definitely established himself as a contender with a score of nine. He was followed by another lSDE veteran Dennis Latrall, who also carded a nine. A 12-minute debit gave A.J. Bila his best finish ever in fifth overall. And yet another ISDE veteran Bruce Field parlayed another 12-point score into a sixth overall. finish. The Open A trophy went to Bob Bennett who headed his Honda XR600 four-stroke through the mazes, amassing a score of 14 and topping all the two-stroke riders in the class. Ken Giles made the long drive from New Mexico worthwhile by handily capturing the gold in the 200cc A class. Jerry Churchill, who recently graduated from the C class, smoked his new KTM 300 to the B class overall victory. He walloped the B ranks with a tally of 18, a five-minute advantage over his nearest competitor Dean Syverson, who topped the 250cc B class. Unlike in the B class, the battle for the overall C honors was tight. Open class rider Dean Hutton ended up acing the short-course competitors with a score of 13, but hard on his tail was a slew of riders all chedcing in with 14point scorecards. Jim Noteboom won the Super Senior class with a score of 13. Results 0/A: Jim Gray (Yam). 0/A AA: Chris Willbanks (Hon). 0/A A; Jim Gray (Yam). 0/A B: Jeny ~urc::hiJI (KlM). a/A C: 1.
