Hayes scores at Bristol Drags
By Dennis Victory
BRISIUL, IN, MAY~
Jimmy Hayes captured the win in the Pro Comp
Eliminator at the !DBA Southeast Nationals at
Bristol International Raceway.
Hayes, one of the most consistent Pro Comp
riders in the country, was having one of those.
days. He usually leaves opponents sucking
nitrous, trying to catch his Suzuki Katana on the
top end, and he was trying to win his firsl !DBA
championship. But in the final, il was Hayes
who found himself staring at the tail end of his
opposition, failing to leave first on every elimination pass.
Yet Hayes drew on each chance to improve
on his reactions, his Katana out-powering everybody to the -win lights. It appeared his luck
would end in the final against Jon Minonno.
Minonno cuI a .454, while Hayes napped to a
.674. Surely more than a two-tenths head start
would guarantee a M1nonno victory?
Not today; not against a rider with the type
of luck Hayes was haVing. Hayes ran past
Minonno when a 15 cent cable broke in
Minonno's nitrous oxide system.
"When I go into around," Hayes said, "I feel
confident that my bike can run with anybody,
and usually I can ride pretty good, too. Today I
was so far off, it wasn't even funny. It was the
bike. It did its job. You could have put anybody
on the bike today and they would have won."
A disappointed M1nonno said, "It's a shame.
It was my best light of the day and my besl 60foot time of the weekend."
In defense of Hayes, his poor slart was
caused by a clutch problem. When he put the
bike on the rev limiter, it crept through the
beams. He pulled it off the rev limiter and
backed out.
"It broke my concentralion," he said. "But
that's no excuse. I should have been ready."
Hayes needed a Sunday final-round qualifying time just to join the 16-bike party. The wedding of a close friend on Sa turday kept Hayes
700 miles away from the dragstrip, but under
!DBA rules, Hayes could attempt to qualify on
Sunday, as his bike was at the track and met all
technical specifications on Saturday. Hayes continued his post-ceremony festivities into the
early morning once in Bristol, at a local pub,
finally ending the night at 3 a.m. Aside from a
few early troubles, however, Hayes lack of rest
didn't seem to effect him, as he rode the the Pro
Compwin.

The Open class was a different story.
Haygood Terrel scored the win but it didn't
come easily.
In the first moto, Terrel was second off the
line before passing Bart Wilber for the lead.
Terrel would go on to score the win, but ,it was
the second moto where he really swealed.
Jusl as in the first moto, Terrel gated second
