Two straight for Schwartz at Speedway USA By Tom Thomas Photo by Jim Thorn VICTORVILLE, CA, MAY 8 A sellout crowd watched Bobby Schwartz score his second straight victory at Speedway USA Saturday night. Schwartz, who is in his 20th year of speedway competition, battled his way to the Scratch main event win after an altercation with Eddie Castro in the six-lap Handicap heat race which led to a lot of unkind words, some threats, a little shoving and eventually a two-lap grudge race which Schwartz won. As he entered the track for his showdown with Castro, Schwartz was greeted with boos from the charged-up crowd. On his victory lap, one fan cried out. "May the Schwartz be with you." The Scratch main pitted Schwartz against John Aden. Steve Lucero and Scott Brandl Uke a man possessed, Schwartz shot to the front from his number two starting position and led flag-to-flag. followed across the finish line by Lucero, Brandt and Aden. in that order. One rider who didn't measure up to his normal front 'running performance was former National Champion Mike Faria. Faria placed third behind Schwartz and Aden in the second Scratch semi which moved him to the Scratch consolation race that he won over Castro and Andy Northrup. The night's closest finishes were Lucero's half-bike length win over Brandt in the first Scratch semi and Jim Estes' "inches ahead" of Brandt in the Handicap main evenl Missing from action this week at Speedway USA were National Champion Chris Manchester ~ho was racing in northern California and first-year Support class rider Angela Hale, who suffered a broken leg while racing at Perris two nights earlier. Ms. Hale will be sidelined indefinitely. CLIP AND MAIL TODAY H you are successful enough to become a member of Team Torco, you will have the chance to win a great deal of cash!
