PHOENIX, AZ, APR. 24-25
Nick Ienatsch piloted a TZ250 to road race wins
at Phoenix International Raceway, soundly
defeating the locals of the AMA/CCS Southwest
Region.
"Our best lap time was 1:05.4, in both the
Middleweight and Unlimited GP," lenatsch
said. HWe mainly came here to warm up for
Charlotte, because the tracks are really similar."
lenatsch competed against Mark Foster, who
also rode a TZ, in several faces over the week·
end, but experience paid off for the veteran pro
racer. Foster, who raced on old tires for much of
the weekend, acknowledged the skills of the
racer who has been his role model: "Nick's a lot
better in traffic than I am."
The two battled it out only in the Solo GTO
race on Saturday, with lenatsch at a disadvantage on a GSX-R750. The quicker-handIing twostroke gave Foster an edge, and he won the
endurance race by a three-second margin.
In the Unlimited GP, a persistent Foster
eventually defeated James Randolph in a bid for
the second-place spot. Foster tailed Randolph
for much of the IS-lap money race, and finally
moved into second after drafting past Randolph
on the banking. lenalsch, once again the winner,
had taken the checkered flag and was well into
his cool-down lap before Foster crossed the finish line.
Multiple contingencies drew a 1arge number
of race participants, including Chuck Graves,
who earned 51000 in Suzuki Cup mooey for his
Unlimited and Heavyweight Supersport victories. A contingency program from Yamaha paid
the top five amateurs of the new Seca II class,
with $1000 going to winner Eddie Gerrish.
Todd Oeveland was awarded second place, and
$750 from Yamaha, only after his motorcycle
passed a teardown inspection. A group of riders
who suspected he was racing with over-bored
cylinders filed the $200 protest fee, which also
went to Oeveland as per AMA/CCS rules.
Final results were delayed until technical
inspector Ed Abdo was able to contact Yamaha
for specifications. When asked for his opinion
regarding Oeveland's performance, Abdo said,
"He was geared properly for the race track, with
four extra teeth on the rear sprocket That's why
the guy was pulling everyone."
An unusually exciting Lightweight
Superbike sprint saw early leader Martin
Harvey crash, changing the second-place dice
between Doug Schmitz and Joe Shelton into a
battle for first Schmitz drafted Ted Shelton on
the banking in the final lap, and pulled alongside. The pair raced side-by-side to the finish
line, with Schmitz edging ahead for the win.
