eEVENTS ; Jim Van Vegten scored the win in the Formub One class at Willow Springs Raceway, the checkered flag, Kapitan had closed in on Seip but bobbled just before the finish line table top jump, costing him second place. Seip secured the second-place position, while Kess1er pooled the moto win. Man: TIes1e< nailed the hoIeshot in the second moto ahead of Kessler, who soon went down. Seip slepped in with Kapitan several seconds behind him. Kapitan got around Seip on lap four then set out 10 put pressure on the firstplace rider, TJeS1er. After two laps, Kapitan got his opportunity and passed T....1er in the fint tum. Kapitan held on 10 score the molo win and overall. Seip ended up fUlishing second and TIl!S1e£ third. Peat. who ended up fifth overa11 in the 25Oa: Expert class, came back and won the 12Sec Expert class, beating McIlvaine and Jay Lynch by a narrow margin. MclIvaine held Peat back 10 second place in the first 1250: Expert moto. He did so by passing Peat just before the twlHap board. MclIvaine came on strong in the final molo, dominating the first seven laps. But Peat kept pace in second with Lynch on his rear fender. Mcilvaine, Peat and Lynch held their positions until Lynch crashed while trying 10 pass Peat on a triple. Seconds Iate<, MclIvaine vanished in the back section of the track. Supermini and 80cc A class racers Ryan Clark. Justin Buckelew and Isaiah Johnson put on an equally good show in their races. In the first 80cc molo, which was n!Started after a red flag, North County Yamaha's Buckelew got out in front while Clark had to fight through the pack. On the last lap Team Green rider Clark caught Justin in the short whoops and held the lead to the flag. Caplinger captures Show-Me Hare Scrambles Wm Hodges howls at Moriarty MX By Arlene Hejlek By Christopher E. Johnson SlEEDMAN, MO, APR. 18 Chris Caplinger scored the overall win at the second round of the Missouri Hare Scrambles Championship Series by topping the 2U-rider field at a challenging event hosted by the ShowMe MoIolliPOrts Oub. Luckily, flooding of the Missouri River receded. a couple of days before the race, but there was still plenty of mud 10 conlend with. Caplinger had his A11< out front at the start of the two-hour event, but dropped back to seventh position as he took the long way up a big hill near the beginning of the eight-mile course. Caplinger didn't realize so many riders were' ahead of him until the end of the first lap, when his pit crew signaled his position. Donelson Cydes/MRM Racing/Sprocket Specialists/Ka1 Gard/BelJ/NGK/ ATK/Met Life-sponsored Caplinger tumed on the gas and began picking off riders. At the start of the fifth and final lap, he passed the leader, Husaberg-mounled Jerry Hemann, on the same big hill where he lost time at the beginning of the raoo. Once out front, Caplinger charged 10 the finish a minute and a half ahead of second-place Leigh Letellier. Letellier was in the lead for the first few laps, with Hemann on his tail. When Caplinger got hung up on the big hill on the third lap, several riders got by, but he worked his way ",p to fourth position by the fourth lap. Caplinger passed Steve Leivan when Leivan got stuck in a rut. In a last-dildt effort. a half-mile from the finish. l.eteI1ier passed Hemann with a spectacular jump, launching his KTM off a ledge at full throttle 10 claim the second position. demoting Hemann 10 third. MORIARTY, NM. APR. 4 Supercross competitors Travis Hodges and Shawn Morga returned 10 Moriarty Motocross Park for the second event of the New Mexico Motoaoss Qub's 1993 ....... and Hodges look ovemII hooors in both the 125 and 250cx A classes. In the first 1250: molD Hodges and Morga. both Team Green supported, traded the lead until Morga slid the rear tire in a hairpin tum. allowing Hodges 10 slip away foc the win. The duo returned in the second molo, swapping first and second for four laps. Hodges used an outside-inside line following the biggest jump on the track, getting a good drive out of the infield hairpin where Morga had slid earlier. Morga came back on the perimeter of the track, showing good technique through the stadium whoop section. When the pair caught up to slower riders Hodges bulldogged his way through the inside of an uphill tum, while Morga had to take the outside line. One of the Iappe
