Goertz wins Bastrop Hare Scrambles By Bob Windham BASTROP, TX, MAR. 28 Honda-mounted Mark Goertz scored the overall and AA class win at round 10 of the Texas Championship Hare Scrambles Series in Bastrop. Finishing second in class was Yamaha rider Shaun Martin, followed by Steve Cardwell, Doug Paley and Clifford Goertz. Cardwell blasted into the early lead, but he would later on develop brake problems as well as a flat front tire. This allowed Goertz to close in and eventually pass the luckless rider for the lead. Martin was another front-runner who fell victim to the rock-covered, cactus and mesquite-lined course, losing valuable time in the pits changing a rear wheel. Martin would re-enter the race and work his way back up to second but couldn't get close enough to the leader Goertz to make a challenge. In the A class division, Bert Reynolds, aboard a 300cc KTM, and Clint Woods, riding a Honda CRI25, were top contenders, and when it was all over, it was the agility of Woods' smallbore Honda winning out over the brute power of Reynolds' KTM. Woods finished a fujI nine minutes over Reynolds. Third went to KTM rider David Peters, while Byron Hanson and Andy Wright rounded out the top five. Mark Vickers and Stuart Edwards diced closely for the lead in the 250cc B division. It wasn't until the halfway point when Vickers' began to pull a slight lead on Edwards. Vickers would go on to score the win ahead of Edwards, Don Murphy, Carter White and Michael Traylor. Results AA: 1. M.nk Gontz (Hon); 2. Shaun Martin (Yam); 3. Steve Cardwdl (yam); 4. Collin Edwards By Tim Sadlo EL PASO, TX, MAR 27 Kevin Clark handled the 250cc Novice class ·at the Coors Light-sponsored EI Paso Stadium SOpercross. . After watching Mark Traversy win hardfought battles in the 250 and 500cc Expert divisions, Clark decided that he preferred an easier approach. Clark was about fourth into the first tum of the first moto, but he squared it off, blew into the front and never looked back. The start of-the second moto was a different story. Clark got the holeshot and was on cruise control, when all of a sudden he was challenged by Clancy Calkin. Ca1kin tried every line on the track to get by, but was not able to complete the pass. On the last lap, Clark wicked it up. With Calkin on his rear tire, Clark grabbed a handful of brake and took the inside line on a very tight right-hand turn. Calkin had planned to take the middle line and block-pass Clarke, but Clarke's gamble paid off. Calkin got out of shape and clipped a hay bale, and Clark went on for the win. Results P/W: 1. Suzuki pilot Greg Rand captured three out of four overall wins at Motocross of Marion County's southeastern qualifer for Loretta Lynn's. There were 370 riders from seven states attending the AMA event. Rand ·kicked off the day by easily winning all four motos in the 125 and 250cc A Modified classes. In the first 125cc A Stock moto, Rand battled with Josh Latina, Jon Rightmire, Don Formo and Steve Allred. Latina and Rand diced for the lead all of the seven laps, with Rand handling lapped traffic to take the win. 1n the second moto Rand rocketed into the lead, as Latiru! gave chase. Latina stayed a couple of seconds behind Rand, until Rand slid to a stop with a seized engine. This gave Latina the overall win, and Rand his only loss of the day. Tellier IClNGMAN, AZ, APR. 13 Jimmy Gaddis treated the spectators at the Kingman Stadium to a spectacle that nonnal1y only reaches the small 1-40 tefueling stop of Kingman through the miracle of satellite television, grabbing the win in the Pro class in the Whiplash Wars Stadium Cross. In deference to the amateur ranking of most of the riders, organizer Jay McKinley opted for only one double jump and no tabletop, but the many action-thirsty fans who showed up at the Mojave County Fairgrounds facility didn't seem to mind. The Team Splitfire/Hot Wheels/Pro Circuit Kawasaki rider made the two-hour drive from Las Vegas, and ended lapping the entire field except for Ted Campbell and Des Piihl, who finished second and third, respectively. Steve Czemiski, who has only been racing for six months, finished a respectable fourth. In the Amateur class, Tim Kennedy bailed hard in the doubles while leadins- suffering a broken forearm. Inheriting the victory over the 19-rider field was Joe Weber, and Heath Mitchell was the runner-up. Mitchell had talr.en a wild tumble in his heat race, but he was impressive in the main. He did have a scare, however, when he landed on the lip of the second double and barely avoided going down again. Terry Kennedy, on a box-stock DR350, gave it a go in the Beginner class, and took down Bobby Creek and Wayne Derrow in the whoops. Dylan Guthrie rode ahead of the mayhem to score the Beginner-class win. By L.C. Pearman LAKEWOOD, CO, MAR 28 Mall Whitmarsh, racing in both the Pee Wee B and Mini Novice classes at Lakewood Race Park, was the first to see the checkered flag in each of his four motos. The excitement came in the Pee Wee class, with Billy Dolson pulling the holeshot in moto one. Whitmarsh was fourth out of the gate and closed quickly.on Dolson. A few comers later Whitmarsh had positioned himself to make an inside move on Dotson, and he took over the lead. Dolson was all over Whitmarsh, but was not able to get a move in that would stick,. and had to settle for the second spot. Moto two is where the two young guns shined. Dotson was the holes hot artist again with Whitmarsh just behind. The two were never more than a bike length apart. Whitmarsh would show his tire to Dolson in every comer, but Dolson held and protected all the right lines. When they came around for the white flaSDolson and Whitmarsh had picked the pace up ·another notch. With less than 50 yards to the checkered, both riders were handlebar to handlebar coming into the last comer. Whitmarsh barely notched the win. 60 NOV: I. Nathian Meyer (Kawt. 2. Nicolaus nice at Carnegie MX By Nuklear Neukam UVERMORE, CA, MAR 21 Jon Nicolaus roosted to the win in the Pro class at Carnegier SVRA's round five of the AMA District 36 Nor-Cal Gran Prix/ Any Rider Kawasaki Challenge. The O'Neal/Power Bar/Lamson Porting/ Works Connection/JN innovations/Peninsula Honda-sponsored Nicolaus topped Stan Fmney both times out on the newly modified Carnegie track. although FInney kept the pressure on as they diced throughout both motos. Justin Owenby kept his Yamaha in contention for most of the laps, but had to settle for a pair of thirdplace finishes, while brother Monty Owenby placed fourth in the first moto, then experienced mechanical difficulties in the final and retired early. Power Bar/Yoko/Motorcycles Unlimited Honda-backed Richard Quinones battled Sam Love in both 250cc Novice class motos, but was able to take the wins and the overall, with Love scoring two seconds for second overall. Hondamounted Chuck Reidmuller finished third in the first outing and slipped to fourth in moto two, but still managed to score a third overall. Mall Kirar was third in mota two, but a molo-one ninth held him to sixth overall Quinones made it a perfect day as he also topped both Up the Hill class motos for the avera)) in that division. Yamaha-mounted David Davis and Steve Swisher traded the runner~up spot after two moto-Iong battles that saw Davis earning second overall by virtue of a beller result in the final go-round. A pair of fourths put Greg Mashore in fourth overall. Bobby Morello dominated the action in the Pee Wee class as he took the overall ahead of Joshua WeBs and Tony Dibasillio, second and third, respectively. A close battie kept things hopping in the 60cc Novice class, as Joey Allen edged out Christopher Loredo and Kathy Pruitt in the first moto. Pruitt came back in moto two to take the
