He was on h is way home from an open house hos ted by Barte ls' H arl ey-Davidson in West Los Angeles, when he lost control of his van on th e rain-d am pen ed Pasaden a Freeway, causing him to hit the center divi der and ro ll over. Dean , who had spe nt th e last half of hi s life in a wheelch air, beca me crippled from a motorcycle racing accident at Ascot. But his en thusiasm for the two -wheeled wo rld never waned. In fact, it steadily increased, and he was considered an authority on vintage motorcycles, espec ia lly the Indian brand. Hi s collect ion of classic models - whic h in cluded Bert Munro's Indian strea m liner - was th e envy of ma ny. His Hi ghland Par k esta te home, with its several buildings, was like a motorcycling museum, with vintage bikes and ear ly-day memorabil ia. Dean was one of the most likeabl e and gen ui ne people you'd ever have the pl easure of kn owing. Hi s life touched many people. H is frien ds from near and far n umbered man y. as evidenced by the overflow crowd of 400 p lus at his fun era l. Dean always enjoyed a good party, and hosted severa l large gatherings each year at h is hom e, incl ud ing the T railblazers an nual Fall Picn ic. H e di d everyt hi ng wi th style and dedication. After his racing accident he decided that he'd like to know more about graphi c arts, especially lettering. He spent the next three years mastering the art by attending classes. Then he launched a business in this field, becoming qui te successfu l in producing lett ered mirrors, signs and T -sh irts. With some of the profi ts he in nvested in real esta te, as well as bui lding up his antique motorcycle collection. T ha t wheelchair never stopped him from his accomp lishment s nor fro m enjoying life and his friends to th e fullest. He wou ld ha ve been very proud of his bro ther, Tom, who along with family members and friend s, put together Dean's final trib ute in the for m of his fun eral. In p lace of a 21-gu n salute, Tom felt that 21 Indian s would be a likely replacement. Thus, foll owing the fune ra l service in San Marin o, an ent our age of motorcyclists - primarily on resto red Indians - follo wed th e hea rse to the graveside services, where, a t the close of the ceremony, the Indian riders fired up their bik es and gave several twists of the thro ttles in a farewell salute to their fallen comrade. And the follow-up "wake" at Dean 's hom e was p u t toge ther just the way Dean woul d have done it. Fin e food and good fellowsh ip reigned supreme. Dean would have liked it. . He will be sorely missed. Go dspeed. Dean . T Bill Bagnall Fill uut completel y a nd prin t clea rly Name Address _ City State Phone ( Zip _.,...-_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Order Date _ (So P .O. Box.
