Ashley held the pressure on for one lap a nd learned Simpson lines. On lap two , Ashley made a clea n pas s and drop ped Simpso n to second. On la p th ree, H ens lee moved past Simpson when he ma de a cos tly error and went dow n . H enslee took over the lead on the white nag lap an d scored the overa ll win with his 3-1 scores. A cool, comfo~ble day gree.ted.34 nders from Michigan , fndlana, and flhnots. The loop consis led of eig h t sectio ns which the riders each rode four tim es. The en tire course was set in the woods with numerou s lar ge hills, ravines. roc:ks, trees, and mud providing plen ty of cha llenges for a ll classes. In the Expert class, Gra y H oward came ou t on top at da y's end on his Yamaha with an impressive low score of 26. A dose race for second went to Gray's brother Brad on h is Yamaha, with Gr eg Rh inesmit h rou ndi ng ou t th e top three on hi s Aprilia. This cla ss provided the moS! spectacu lar riding display, especially in section eight which ha d a lar ge tree stu mp in the side of a hill that the riders were required to go over from th e top . It 'was so steep that most experts chose 10 leap off to the botto m instead of rolling down the face of the tree. fn the Advanced class, Gary Groat rode his Yamaha to a convincing win over Randall Miller . Steady rai n for several days preceding the tria l left low lying pa rts of the loop, notably sectio ns two and four , very slippery and Groot did an excellen t job of negouating the course .0!l his way to th~ win . Compeuuon was fIercest In the large Novi ce Mike. Battista (I8) and Ra y Bowers (98) shadowed Shawn O'Brien (70) as they funneled into turn one at Glen Helen MX. class, T here were 10 riders who vied for the win and at the end of the day Mark Pufpaff an d Kerry Keeps were tied at 15 points each . A winner was determined by cou n ting the number of sectio ns that were clea ned with Pufpaff taking the overall with 25 clea ns to Keeps' 23. ft was nearly a three-way tie with Tim Laure fini shing third with 16 poi nts. Both Formu la On e and 600cc Super Street classes had $500 going to the Yam aha that could fin ish a t the fron t of the field. Trac k conditions were great a ll weeken d , wit h tempera lures hovering around 80 degrees and a slig ht breeze cooling th in gs off. In the Formula One race, bot h Ritch ie T horup and Dale Kieffer battl ed hard on their Yama ha FZRs over first p lace. It was .c1ose from stan 10 fin ish , but the checkered nag saw Thorup come in firs t. Wilh the contingency mon ey goi ng back three places, J ay Duff was not far beh in d on ano ther FZR. The 600cc Super Street race was a virt ual repl ay of the Formula One race, with Thorup ou trunni ng Kieffer 10 take firs t again. Robb ie Dowi e came in third on his Honda. In 50cc Super Stree t action , Earl Sm ith had a tremendous ba ttle with Bill Rough. Smith, on a Yam aha TZ50, work ed har d keep in g Roug h 's Yamaha DT 50 close.
