Borges bags Sunrise GP laurels By Frank Beach ADELANTO, CA, MAR. 8 Chris Borges endured 45 minutes of hard racing to score th e I25cc Beginner class victory at round two of th e Dou ble Cross Raci ng's Freeway Series , held at Sunrise Cycle Park. a ll the line it was Ronnie Delbridge with the holeshot leavin !;: Bor ges, Bill O wens and Brian Enstra nd lO h ght over the second spot. Delbri dge qu ickl y lost con trol of the lead as Borges, Ow ens and En strand all went by in single fil e. Enstrand moved into second, and sta rted to reel in Bor ges. Enstrand pulled o ut a ll the SlOpS and sailed past Borges by dearing th e do u ble jumps. Not content with second, Fo rges press ured Ens tra nd hop in g he would mak e a m ista ke. Bo rges go t hIS chance whe n Ens trand overs hot a tum at th e end of a high speed stra ig ht that took him o ut of contention. Back in the lead , Borges hel d o n for th e win wi th Ow en s, Sco tt Grimsgaard, Steve Scott and Jim my Dirkson roundi ng out th e top five. The Vet Beginner class saw Dennis Gu tia · rez grab the early lead with Jay Du puy gl ued to h is rear fender. The two battled early as Dupuy o ut bra ked Gu tierrez into a comer and ioo k over the lead. Mid-pack starter Joh n ny J ackson moved into third and then roosted .past Gu tierrez and mo unted a charge for Dupuy. Jackson 's charge carried him alongside Du puy a nd beyo nd. As Jackson p ulled ' o ut a six-seco nd lead. Du puy in second had his han ds fu ll with Gutierrez a nd hard-charger Bill Werner. Dupuy bobbled slightly, letting Gu tierre z and Werner by. The las t two lae s saw J ackson with a co mforta ble lead as Bl1l Werner an d J ay Du puy bo th got the upper han d on a tir mg Gu tierrez . who faded to fourth. J ack son went on to d aim the win. Werner was second with Dupy, Gu tierr ez and Jim Madden ro unding o ut th e tOP live. Chad Blough smo ked the Vet Amat eur d ass. In tu m one. Ch ad found him sell runnin g fourth fonow in g Chris Brooke, J eff Larson and Jim Ca lkins. Blough mad e quick wor k of Brooke and Larson, an d ch arged al ter Calkins. Calkins put up a one-la p light agai nst Blough and lost, as Blough go t by and proceeded to break away . H onda -mo unted Mark Myers scored Ihe wi n in the Expert class . Hon da-b acked Rick Alves took control of the lead wi th Myers hot on hi s trail. Mickey O 'S ha ugh ness y crashed in turn o ne bu t quickly remounted an d gave chase. Alves, an intermedia te aboard a 250, was giving 125mo unted Myers fi ts as he rode flaw lessl y out fro nt in track conditions tha t favored power. Myers mad e a few da ri ng a ttempts to pass, but Alves wasn 't givi ng u p the lead wihlOu t a good reaso n. Just pas t the ha llway poi n t Alves bobbled in a tu m and Myers was able to swoop in to the lead. Alves tried va lia ntly to fight him o il , but to no avail. Myers stayed o ut front to ta ke th e win wh ile Alves foll ow ed in at seco nd ahead of O'Shau ghnessy. O 'Sha ugh nessy shot into the lead in mo lO two. and Myers and Alves settled in be hi nd. Myers wa s again givi ng up hor sepower to O 'Sha ugh nessy's 250 bu t he was determi ned . .After pressuring for th e first hall of the race , Myers found th at opportu ni ty doe s knock twice as O 'Sh au ghnessy swa p ped sideways whi le nego tiatin g a switch-back section and Myers grabbed for th e lead. Alter a litt le bar ban ging, O 'Sha ugh nessy settled for sta yi.ng Mike Treadwell (97) chased Jean Roy in 250ccA action at Florida Motorsports Complex. mounted as Myers look co n tro l of the lead. O 'Shaugh nessy tried to close back in but time ra n o ut and he ended up second for the same overall while Myers went home with th e brass. Alves was th ird for third overall a nd top Inter media te. The O pen class was an a ll-H onda affair. Inte rm ed ia te Rick Home came from behind to win the first moro. but wasn 't abl e to d up lica te tha t feat th e second time out and Ste ve Mach ad o wo n . Machado , however. scored a DNF in moto o ne so Home still captured th e overall. Pete Krunich was th e hot Open Novi ce. as he topped Robert Stulty and Mike Kendro in each mot o. The th ree battled fiercel y both times ou t with Stuhy making two aw esom e last-lap efforts that cam e u p short. Stulty had to sett le for the runner-u p trophy. Resul ts EX: l. MAR. 22 The th ird round of the Florida Motocross Club Series was held at the Florida Motorsports Complex. and the to p winners of th e day were Mike Treadwell in the l25cc A an d Jean Sabatian Roy in the 250cc A classes . When the ga te fell Roy flew into the lead , with Lino Zecca, T read well, Mar ty Burr and Chris Lemmo n in his dust. T readwell and Burr q uickly passed Zecca, while closi ng in o n leader Roy. On th e third lap, Treadw ell ma de his m ove in a tum to ta ke over the lead positio n fro m Roy. While T readwell and Roy were ou t front Burr, Lemmon and Zecca swapped pos itio ns a cou p le of tim es, until Roy b rok e away. Zecca th en shot by Lemmon' on o ne of th e many uphills, as did Travis Blackburn . T readwell took th e mo lO victory over Roy, Burr, Zecca a nd Blackburn. In the second race, Roy rocketed in to the first pos ition. as Blackburn, Ben Ovellette. Lem mon a nd T rea dwell followed. H allway i mo the firs t ' la p , Treadwe ll d ispla ced Ovellette an d Le mmon for third. Burr also got by Ove llette. Roy, Blackburn and Treadwell p ulled a way from the fie ld . u mil Treadwell snaked by Blackburn on an uphill jump. Blackburn th en stalled, lettin g Burr by, as Zecca moved by Lem mon for filth. T readwell dogged Roy but co uldn' t lind a way aro und him. At th e finish lin e, Roy took the moto and overa ll win ahead of Treadw ell by half a bik e length. with Burr just ho lding oil Blackburn and Zecca. In th e l25 cc A class Roy took th e first moto win over a close Treadwell and Zecca. \'i'hile in th e seco nd moto Treadw ell held o n for the win and overall ahead of Roy, Zecca, Don Forrno and John Vangilder.
