Open class expert Pau l Ostbo [or two hours
and 47 mi nutes.
At 10:05 a.rn., a sing le shot signaled th e mas s
start, and over 400 ra cers scram bled down a
dust free no rtheast ern slope, a parade tha t
q ui ckl y sp read out as riders figured o ut
straigh ter lines between co urse ribbons. Sixt y
seconds lat er , J De KOPI? led th e wa y down the
Eas tern face of Pyramid, and turned sharply
righ t on to a dirt road that ma de a five mile
so uth ern loop back to pit row. A split second
la ter, La nce Ri ch oue, Eri c Larson, Kei th
Lindsay, and T y Rober ts exerted pressure to
pas s. Abo ut 600 feet behind th e leader Paul
Os tbo and Jason Dahners blasted down th e
trail side-by-side.
O n th e first loo p , Paul Ostbo picked up
the pa ce and found the right line to pa ss
Dahners.
" I had a lot of head shake," said Dahners.
Ostbo pursued Roberts, Li ndsay, Larson,
and Kopp , while Da hn ers sha do wed Ostho.

didn 't lik e to guess. Near the end of th e firs t
loop, Er ic Larson dr opped out whe n his
Yama ha 's rear brak es seized up.
By II :30 a.rn., Ostbo had developed a 30seco nd lea d on Dahners o n h is wa y into pi t
ro w. T y Robe rts came into th e pits with a
Oat tire. Friends tor e a tire off anoth er bike
and mount ed it on Rob erts' Kawasaki. Roberts
lost three positions as he merge d o n to the
co urse in front o[ Dar in Wolfe.
Ostbo pa ssed thro ugh th e last chec k point,
eig h t mil es from the £in ish, over three mmutes
ahead of Dahners, Six miles lat er, Ostbo ra n
out of gas . Da hners looked at Ostbo o n his
. way by. Ostbo received fuel from a spectator,
but ra n o ut of gas a seco nd time. A jubilant
Jason Dahners finished at 12:52 p.m, to score
th e overall a nd fir st pla ce in 250cc class . Three
min u tes la ter, Paul Ostbo managed to finis h
second overa ll and first in the O pen class . A
