Schoonover squeezed by, bUI Borgman didn't mak e it, a nd found him self o n th e o ther side of the tra ck in a cornfield. With Borgman o u t of th e p icture and only two laps to go, it was dear sail ing for Schoono ver to th e chec kered n ag. The race was over lor first. but not for seco nd . as three riders diced up behind Schoonover. Mark Froeli ch was hard pressed to keep hold of hi s pos itio n, as Dean Howard and T yran Maternan went peg- to-peg o n his rear wh eel. Howard sna tched the edge for third o ver Mat ernan just as th e nag came down. After leading the field for ni ne and a half laps in the 50cc class, Holl oway's Yama ha started to q uit on him. By lap four , H o lloway had o n ly one rid er left in fron t of him, Mike Forro. Holl ow ay ca ugh t up with Forro on lap 10, a nd dr afted by o n the back side. Forro ma tched moves and took it right back , but H o lloway returned th e favor next tim e around. Just when it looked as if Holloway had th is o ne sewn up. he slid o u t in turn three a nd watched a nother sla te cha mp ions hip go by.
