Up front , a two -way dice formed between lead er Ba yle and teammate Sta nton. A few seco nds back, Lechien a nd Kawasaki Team Green 's Gene Na umec ga ve chase. Naum ec lost co nt ro l o f fo urth, though , when he laid his bike do wn in a turn. Things didn 't get any better for the Fl o ri da reside n t when h e cras hed again, ending his day and handing fourth to Ward, who had just di sposed o f Fisher. . It was a Bayle/Stanton show to th e end, as th e two riders pulled away from th e pack . Stanton sta rted cha llenging Bayle near the hal£way poin t and th e two Honda pilots traded positions a few times, then Bayle, once again, took con trol. " I was j ust watching him for a while, chec king out h is lines, " said Stanton. " I made a cha rge at him , but he kept pas sing m e back." Stanton waited until th e seco nd-tolast lap befor e making a second serious sta b a t th e leader, but h is stra tegy backfired when he cra shed. " I waited until th e last few laps to make a not he r cha rge, but I went down in a turn ," sa id Stanton. " I went into th e turn too fast and the next thing I knew I was bouncing all to hell." Sta n to n's cras h ga ve Bayle a huge lead a nd a n easy win, while Stanton recovered to finish all alo ne in seco nd p lace. Wh ile Stan to n a nd Bayle dueled for j he lead , Ward a nd former factory Kawasaki teammate Lech ien we re doi ng th e same for third. After passing Lechien earlier in the race , Wa rd was caught by surpri se when L echi en fought back and. at one time, actually got a wheel in on Ward. Unfortunately for Lechien, tho ug h, a la p ped rid er got in his wa y and he couldn 't co m p lete the pa ss. Kno wing that Lechien was now a threa t, Ward picked up th e pa ce and pu lled slightly away for th e rest of the race. Ward end ed up cros sing the finish line some 49 seconds behind runnerup Sta nton , wh ile Lec hien fin all y bro ke hi s fifth-place streak by crossing the fin ish line in fou rt h. By th e end o f the first lap, Kiedrowski led th e way with La Rocco in close pursuit, followed by Cooper and Team Pea k/H onda rider Jeremy McGrath. " I came up short o ver th e triple jumps and cased it ," said Kiedrowski, who rejoined the ra ce in fifth place, sa n d wich ed between Vohland a nd Cooper. "By the time I got going, everybody had gone by." 13
