Eric Brouhard led the 600cc Amateur main
from sta rt to fin ish. Brouhard was pressed
hard by Norb Gregory until lap five, when
Grego ry fen and Ron Bystrom took over
second The finish ing ord er was Brouhard,
Bystrom, T im Gregory, Tim McBrid e and Bill
Gary, with Joe Blackwell bringing up the rear.

Shade shines at Bastrop Motocross

David Shade cast a dark shado w over the rest
of the expert field by po stin g four-stra ight
moto win s in the 125 a nd 250cc Expert classes
at ro und three of the South Texas Summer
Series, hosted by the La keside Motosports
Track.
The star t of the first l25cc Exper t moto saw

Sha de riding a borrowed Suzu ki , pu n away
for an early lead , follo wed close ly by J ell
Dement, Steve Rathman, J ason Kremp in and
Jack Beckham. The firs t th ree laps prov ed a n
easy ride for Shade, who led the way while
the rest of the field worked themselves out,
By lap three, Krempin had worked his way
up to second pla ce, and had set hi s sigh ts on
Shad e. By lap five, the two leaders had pulled
out about 10 seconds on th e second group of
riders, led by Dement in thi rd, Beckham in
fou rth and Rowdy Flanegan in filt h po siti on.
Shade and Krernpin set a blisterin g pa ce, with
Krimpin pressu ring Shade for the remainder
of the race. Despite his efforts to get by Sha de,
Krempin was un able to find the open in g he
needed to mak e the pa ss, bringing the first
mtoo to an end with Shade in first foll owed
by Krernpin, Dement, Beckham and Flanegan,
Moto two was as close as th e first , with J T
Racing/R8cD /Dunlop·backed J ell Dem ent
speedi ng out of the first tum ahead of the
rest of the pa ck. Shade and Krernpin were
second and third, respectively. The three front. runners took their baule to a live-second lead
over the rest of the pack by the end of the
second lap. On lap three, Shade found his
way around Dement and quickl y began to pu t
some distance between him self and Krempirr,
Krernpin wasn't able to get by Dement until
lap four, and by tha t tim e Shade was seven
seconds in the lead Krempin put on a bu rst
of speed tha t moved his Clovis Racing-backed
Honda to within one bike length of Shade.
Shade picked up the pace and began to fight
oll the hard char~ng Krempin, Following
Shade and Krempin across the line in third,
was Jack Beckham, who was able to get by
a fading Dement on the sixth la p. Dement
held on for fourth with Flanegan follow in g
in fifth . Shade was rewarded for his effort with
a first overall via two mota victories , while
Krempin came up just short in both motos
to claim second overall. Beckham finished
third overall foll owed in th e overa ll by
Dement and Flanegan,

Spoonogle tramples Cobleskill MX

Kurt Spoonogle used a perfect I- I moto
combina tion to secure the overall win in the
Open Amateur class at Cobl eskill MX Park.
There were 200 riders wh o put on an excellent
sho w for the man y spec tators spending the
La bor Day weekend at the trac k.
George Aust in n ew in to the early lea d in
th e first moto, but Spoonogle was hot on
h is fender . Belore the en d of lap one,
Spoo nogle was by Aus tin and int o the lead.
Dave Sherwood too k ad van tage of a bobble
by Aus tin to tak e over th e ru nner-up spot.
She rwood stalled h is bike at the bottom of
th e do wn h ill , a nd Au stin ran into th e ba ck
of h im and got stuc k. Au stiri untan gled
h im self and sped a way ahead of Sherwood,
who go t going just ahead of Steve Beckwith .
On the next lap , Beckwith made his way past
Sherwood . Spoo nogle wa s do mi na n t
throughout the race and finis hed well ahead
of Aus ti n .
Spoonogle got away cleanly in moto two,
leavin g Austin behind. Austin had his hands
full tryi ng to keep Joe Szczepa nski from
passing. At the bouom of the downhill , Austin
mad e a mistake, and Szczepanski was close
enough to take adva ntage. Szcze panski
wrestled his 1984 H onda" CR500 to second
Spoonogle again was the clear winner of the
rnot o, while Aus tin held th ird ahea d of
Beckwith.
Mich ael Kell y stole the show in the 200cc
Novice cla ss. Ri ght oll the ga te, Kell y led hi s
competi tors. Six riders made a freigh t train
for the nex t position s. Mat t Vanderstad was
in second for two laps until he went down .
Greg McCulloch took over the spo t, while
SCOll Tro mbly an d Brandon Klintworth
• pla yed chase. Alter swap ping positions ma ny
ti mes, they both go t by for keeps before the
fini sh.

Klintwonh led early in moto two. Kelly ne w
pa st him q ui ckly, but then went down on the -.
same downhill tum sectio n. Klintworth found
himself ou t front, with Trombly and Ed
Connor a cou ple seconds back. Connor got
around T rombly, and caug h t Klintworth and
went by quickly. Trombly ma naged to catc h
and pass Klintworth al ter a lap-Ions du el.
Kell y charged th rough th e class after hISspill,
bu t cou ld only work up to sevent h. Trom bly's
2-2 scores secur ed the overa ll win.
