Acer b i s / Motu 11S m i th l Ceetsponsored Tim Sta ufenbeil scored overall victo ries in both th e 125 a nd 250cc Intermediate classes at the fir st ro und of the CMC Trans-Cal Seri es South, held at Gl en Helen OHV Park. Staufenbeil's closes t competition came in the first 250cc Intermediate moto, in the form of Aaro n Wen strup. Wen strup blasted off the lin e ahead of Staufenbeil , Keith Mayes, Chad Schol z and Merle Hammer. Wenstrup and Sta ufenbeil quickly put two seconds on the rest of the field on the first lap . Sta ufenbeil lea p t to the insid e o f Wenstrup on the big tabletop jum p and sna tched th e inside line goi ng into the next turn. The two rid ers continued to trade the .lead, bu t on the th ird lap, however, th e ac tion go t a little too hot as both riders slammed togeth er and fell. Staufenbeil got up fast eno ugh 10 retain th e lead ; bu t Wenstrup fell to sixth. From th at po int o n, Staufenbeil poured o n the gas and crossed the finish lin e five seconds ahead of Chad Scholz, with Keith Mayes, ' Wen strup an d Bill Sauro ro undi ng out the to p five. The second moto belonged to Wen stru p , as Sta ufenbeil ga ted Poorl y and was never able to cha llenge. Wenstrup grabbed the holeshot and sp rinte d into the lead ahead of J ustin McMurrich, Jonas Dunn, Staufenbeil and Dennis Dahlin . Wenstrup was ch a ll en ged ear ly by McMurrich, who eventua lly fell and finished fifth . Stau fenbeil passed Dunn in the back 'section on lap three and narrowly m issed McMurru ch whe n he fell. Staufenbeil eventually worked i nto seco n d place. Sta ufenbeil's scores of 1-2 were good eno ugh for the overall victory, while Wenstrup's 4-1 scor e gave him second overall. T he 125cc Intermediat e class aga in saw Staufenbeil and Wen strup pitted against one ano ther. Lex Malan rocketed off the line in the first mo to ahead of Staufenbeil , Bob Sage, Wens trup and Steve Drew. H alfway through the first' lap, Staufenbeil found his way around Mal an P and took over the lead posito n. Sage began chi pping away at Staufenbeil's lead , an d on th e th ird lap o ut-j umped Staufe n be il o n th e back tab letop . Sta ufenbeil railed the o utside berm after th e downhill and passed him back. Sage la ter crashed on the back downhill, but man aged to remount an d fini sh in th ird position. Sta u fen beil crossed the finis h line first, four seco nds ahead o f Wen strup , Sage, Up ton and Dell sgaue. Wenstrup led the pack around th e first corne r at the star t of the second rno to. Staufenb eil bounced aro und Wenstrup on the fourth la p, and led until Upton ran aro und bot h Sta ufenbeil and Dahlin to take the lead. Upton kept the lead until th e finish, with Staufenbeil , Dahlin, Wen strup and Evilsizer fini shing out the top five. As in th e 250cc class, combi ned rno to scores gave Staufenb eil the overall win , with Wen strup fin ishi ng second. . . Mik e Young won the lio n 's share of the Pro purse in the 125 Pro class. Young led the pack around the first turn in th e first 125cc Pro mo to , but was passed by eventual rnoto winner Brian Manley. Young' hel d o n to seco nd, ahead of Eri ckson, T ravis Hodges and Billy Felts. Young got the jump in moto two , ahea d of Manley, Erickso n, H odges and Erick Hilton. Manley put th e pressure on Young, bu t Y o ung wicked up the pace. Wh en th e du st cleared, it was Young, lO-seconds ahead of Manley, followed by Eric kso n an d Hodges. Rick Go rn ey gra bbed th e hol eshot at the sta rt of the first moto and held the lead to the finis h. where he had Steve Sm ith g lued to his rear fende r. Yohe passed David Ca rnes on the last lap to capture thi rd. The second moto was a ll Yohe as he got the ho lesho t and went o n to the mo to victory. Smith held second from start to fin ish a nd well ahead of Go rney whe n th ey crossed th e finis h line. Nicolas Var go led th e l 2-rider Automatic 50cc 4-8-year-old field to the first turn in mo to on e. Mike Bro wn slo tted in beh ind for second ju st ah ead of Du stin Canno n , Mikey Klin ger and Levi Krider. On the seco nd lap Krid er moved to third whe n Klin ger and Ca n non cras hed. Dai ly, backed by Rocky's Antique Cycles, Bro wn En gineering, Ho lsho y Welding Supply, Ch in a Kitchen , Alibi Lou nge, Wal es Racq uet and Fi tness Center, had already wo n the Scra tch mai n event a nd both of h is hea t races. Da ily sat o u t the fir st heat, while Pat Reyno lds took a wire-to-wire victory o ver Mark Ma urer and Curt Cerw in sky. Dai ly also wen t wire-to -wire in his heat , with Mike Weaver and J eff T retara chasing him to th e fin ish. The th ird heat had th e ma tch u p of Reynolds and Dail y, wi th tou gh newcomer Cerwinsky a lo ng for th e ride. Reynolds pulled th e ho leshot wi th Dai ly and Cerwinsk y in hot pursu it. Reynolds p ushed a little too hard. and wen t o ff the groove into fou r. Cerwi nsky too k th e checkered nag first. Maure r won the final heat, with Weaver ta king seco nd for the fin al two spots in the , scra tch main. Dail y and Reynolds had the to p spots in the Scra tch ma in and reall y wanted to square off fo r th e win . At th e gree n light in th e Handicap ma in , Mau rer mad e a quick move on Cerw ms ky to tak e secon d, while Reyn olds was movin g up fast from the 50 yard line. an d passed Maurer on lap three. T retara ran up fro nt, and after four laps, Da ily caugh t Reynolds. By th e lim e Dai ly passed Reynolds. there were only two laps to go to ge t T retara for the wi n. " I had T reta ra in myu sights, and he has been ridi n' real good. When 1 saw the white flag I kn ew we were go ing to have a close one," said Daily. Dail y's pr ediction was accura te. O n la p three, Langland tried too ha rd, slid o ut and let Er ic Brouhard take his spot. La ng la nd passed Brou ha rd back o n the next lap, bu t lost hi s cha nce to o verta ke Hofm eister.
