GLOCAL EVENTS e Hess aces Hidden Acres MX By Barbara and Lor e n W illiams Hidden Acres MX action saw Brian Hess (578) and David Buis (9) battle for po sition. Mark Neal (54) chases Dan Tanner (93) through a sandy LACK MX turn. KI.'1GSPORT, TN, SEPT. I Brian Hess won three out of four rno ros to chalk u p wins in the 125 and 250cc C class at Hidden Acres MX. After dominating bot h mo tos in the 250cc C class on h is Bare Bros. Kawasaki, Hess wheeled up to the 125cc C cla ss start on a friend's Honda. " He says it's down on power, and he's right," said H ess. " It won 't pull o n a hill. But we brought it to race, so we might as well see wbat it can do. " Deprived of th e power needed to co mma nd th e ho leshot, H ess was forced 10 rel y o n co rner ing ski ll a nd jump savvy to work h is way 10 th e head of th e pace. Bu t Kevin Mills was o u t to make sure his Mountain Motorcycl es-backed Honda didn 't make th ings easy for the interloper. Mills breezed around th e Hidden Acre s track for five of th e seven -lap mo te. oblivious to the hard wo rk go ing on behind hi m as Hess slogged his wa y throu gh the pack o ne by o ne. On lap six , "I loo ked across a corner a nd th ere he was ," sai d Mill s. "Lucky for me th a t bike did n' t ha ve any power, because he was ri g h t behind me." Hess finis hed second to Mill s, leadi ng Scott Carter, Ryan McCann and David Buis acr oss th e finish line. Moto two saw Buis in th e lead, but he fell in th e woods section and let Kipper Ketron tak e th e point. Hess lagged off th e line in fifth ahea d of Mills. Vaulti ng past two riders in th e a ir on the firs t tabletop, Hess lost ground to seco nd-p lace Jim Neece going up the hill into th e woods, but made u p time in the co rners and coming back down to th e wh oops. Hess captured seco nd by duckin g inside through a turn in th e whoops, th en set his sights o n lead er Ketron. After catching Ketr on just befo re the line o n th e next la p , Hess proceeded 10 Flo g th e Honda in an attem pt to put some track between them. As thi ngs developed, th e knot of rid ers th at ca u g h t up to Ketron dem an ded a ll hi s atten tio n and he had no mo re lime lO worry about catching up with Hess. AUG. 31 Mike Couture did n 't let sl i p pery track conditions keep him from earning th e overall win in th e 250cc Beginner class at Dade Cit y Raceway. A steady downpour soaked th e clay surlaced track ju st before the start, an d th e !t'"0und crew work ed ha rd 10 get the tra ck back mto shape for the race program. Scott Fiebel korn led the 13-rider field inlO the first turn of the six-lap first molO. Couture was clo se to Fiebe lkorn throu~hou t th e first lap , and took o ver the lead. RIchard Eggars, Scott Barth and J eff Rose roundeil out th e top five. Steve Dyer was riding with th e group, but fell o n a step- u p jump. Eggars wa s fi~htin~ to hol d o nto the th ird spo t, dici ng wtth Ri ck Carney who had mo ved up from sevent h . Carney fell in a turn and lost the positio n to Eggars. By the half way point. Fiebelkorn was back o n Co u ture's rear fender. closi ng the ga p on th e leader, Carney's bad luc k co ntin ued when his bike stalled on th e fourth lap , and Rick Langley slip ped into fifth. Couture held off Fiebelkorn for the win . Egga rs, Barth and Langley filled th e top five J?OSitio ns . Couture had to work hts way up from a fifth-pl ace . tart to win the second mo to. The trac k was not as slippery for the stt'ond race. Fiebelkorn grabbed th e ho le. hot and Carney was next to him. Eggars shot past Carney and Fiebelk orn ear ly in th e first la p to take th e lead. Couture al so moved past Carney . Eggars, Couture and Fiebelkorn began to ru n away from the rest of th e fiel d. Coutu re a nd Fiebelk orn were really going a t i t, bu t Co uture handled Fiebelkern by the ba lfwa y poi nt a nd began closing on Egga rs. CA, AUG. 30 Steve Smith stormed to a set of co nvi ncing mot a victo ries in th e 125cc Beginner class du ri ng th e "California Ra cin g Club 's night raci ng program held at Los Ange les County Ra ceway. Ran dy Li ppie gra bbed the holesh ot in th e first mo to. close ly pursued by Ro my Ratliff and J osh Jenkins. Sm ith sta rted midpack as did Scott Reed Jr. an d to geth er th ey carved the ir way to th e fronL Lippie began 10 slow hi s pace a t the halfway mark, allo wing Smith, wh o had charged to seco nd. enou/1h room 10 sli p by for th e lead. Once into fust, Smith pulled away to a com ma nd ing lead at th e finis h. Both Reed and Justin Cowan char ged pas t the exha usted Lippie during th e final laps to fini sh 2-3 droppmg him to fourth at th e checkered nag. Lippie aga in led the charl;e at the start of moto two with Smith, Ra th ff and Ca meron Davidson in to w. Li ppie was no match for Smi th as he surrendered the lead by th e end of th e first lap. Like in the firs t molO, Smi th smo ked away from th e pack to th e eventual win . While Smith was enjoying himself up front, Lip pie was under a ttac k from both Reed a nd J im Pa tten . L ippie did a gr eat job of blocking the two riden , bu t' an extended second m a LO took its toll o n the 30-year-o ld Lippie as he again slipped to fifth behind Nat e Evan s. Patten , Reed and win ner Smi th. Damon Huffman made his Pro class debut a rewardi n~ experience by scori ng th e overall win and first-pl ace cash. Huffman finis hed seco nd to Andy Ellis in the opening moto, but tu rned th e tables by motoring awa y from Ellis in moto two . A special o ne-mote Vintage class race was run with a n umber of riders showing up for the event, Bill Leo nard and Hugh Blacka battled earl y in the event with Leonard backing down to Blacka after an early power pass by the H o nda pilot. Blacka 's lead began to shri n k midway through th e moio as both Ken Green e and Mark Neal began 10 reel him in . During th e remain ing laps Blacka slip ped back to fourth as G reene and Neal mo ved into the top two spots. Neal pu t th e pressure on Green e la te in th e race, making a clean pass for the lead.
