Williams, ridi ng a Hon da , posted a tim e of 6.1994 seconds up the approxima tely 375-foot hill located on th e Wh it e Rose M.C. gro u nds in sout hern Pennsylvania. A crow d estimated at 4000 was on hand for th e even t. The National Invitational Hillclimb features the top 15 rid ers in both the 800 and 540cc classes. It does not count in the 1991 points race for th e National Championship. Williams' father J ohn took fifth place with a 6.5395 climb and younger brother Greg was lOth with a best climb of 6.7127. bo th also on Hondas. H arl ey-D avid son-mounted J eff Yoder earned runner-up hon ors with a 6.3997 performance. Fellow H oosier State rider Lou Ger encer was th ird at 6.4158 and Robert Casledin e of Massach usetts was fou rth at 6.4869. Tim Frazier of Oh io won the 540cc class with a 6.9490 clim b aboard his BSA. A 7.2252 run up the hill earned New En glander Paul Pinsonnault second and Mich igan rider Dou g Klon t was thi rd with a 7.4692 p er 01 form an ce. C Silver Creek MX action saw Larry Andrews (501), Chad Lough (959) and Shane Templeton (929) battle for position in the first 125cc A class moto. Correy comers Penhall Classic Speedway By M . Sober SAN BERNARDINO, CA, JULY 24 onn ie Correy started h is return with a ba ng, winning five out of six heats on his way to capturing his first ever Bru ce Penhall Classic at Glen H elen. The 11th running of thi s pres tigious m idsummer classic was stocked wi th former National Champions, as well as previous Penhall Classic w inners, such as Bobby Schw artz, Steve Lucero, Alan Christian and current champ Mike Faria. Correy, riding one of the Russell Racin g Team bikes, started out the eveni ng by taking a win and three poin ts over two oth er Russell Racing T ea m m em ber s, Scott Brant who fin ished second and Josh Larsen who finished fourth. Meanwhile, Faria , Schwartz and Gary Hi cks were al so postin g three poi nt wins in the first round. . T he second round started with th e recen tly returne d Eddie Castro win ni ng the first heat, followed by Larsen upsetting Schwartz and Brant getting into the winner's circle. That brought out the fou rth hea t of th e round, and one of th e toug hest rides of the nigh t. Faria and Correy who were bo th spo rting perfect scores were join ed by Lucero and Ch arl ie Venegas. Faria gai ned the initial advantage in th e opening laps wi th Correy drivin g hard on the outs ide loo king to overtake th e National Ch ampi on . Correy, in his zeal to drive inside of Fari a in tum two of lap three, overslid and went do wn , dropping him ou t of second p lace and into the unenv iable position of scori ng no points in h is second ride. The th ird round started wit h Brant taking another win , this tim e over . Faria who finished a close second. Correy got back onto the winning side of the program , posting an impressive win over youngs ters Brent Werner and J esse Finch . Sch wartz was relega ted to last place in hi s th ird hea t when he tried to ca tch Co rrey in the first turn bu t got too far out into the deep dirt and had to slo w down to avoi d th e crash wall . T he th ird round ended with L ucero taking hi s first win of th e night and Lar sen winning h is second stra ight heat , th is tim e over a fading H icks. The sta nd i n gs a t intermissi on showed Fari a and Brant on top with eig ht po int s apiece, followed by a log jam of riders tied with six points apiece. R 36 The six point group included Larsen , Correy, Lucero. Castro and H icks. The fourth round open ed with Correy gaining another three points over Chris Manchester and H icks. The second heat of th e round sa w Brant co me from th e outs ide to win over Schwartz and Lucero . Larsen al so continued to recover from an ,early round zero , drivin g to th e win over Faria . .Vene gas showed Finch and Castro the fast est way arou nd th e oval in the final hea t of the round scori ng his first a nd on ly wi n of the meeting. The fifth and fin al round started with Larsen getting h is fourth straigh t win. Larsen qualified for the main event with h is victory. The next heat ' was won by Faria who out dis tanced Schwartz and Hicks. Correy conti nued to make up for his second round fall by taking a relatively easy win over Tony Beinert and Don Odom. T he final heat win of the evening went to Werner when Brant's bik e broke right after the start of th e race. Brant still managed to qualify for the main event having accumulated II points in hi s first four ride s. In year s' past the Bru ce Penhall Classic winner was determin ed stric tly in cha mp ion sh ip-s tyle format , th e rider with the mo st point s after five rides was the winner. But 1991 wo u ld be different. th e po wers that be decided to give the fans an extra race, thus the main event 'was added. Qual ifyin g with 13 points was Fari a, second was a tie between Correy and Larse n wit h 12 each. Brant was th e fourth participa nt with II points. The main event starti ng posi tio ns were determi ned by points, thusly Faria was on the po le with Correy in . the second spo t next to Larsen in three and Brant on the outside in four. As the tapes wen t up Correy was the first to react, dri ving hard into tu rn one wit h Faria right on h is tail. La rsen followed behind Fa ria wi th Brant wor king the outside lin e. Faria attempted to reel in Correy, first trying th e slick in side line' and then goi ng to th e out side but nothing was wor king , as Correy was hooked up and flying. Meanwhile, at the rear of th e heat , Brant was taking a page from th e book of Fari a, as he was pu tti ng on a displ ay o f ou tside line ri ding th at wo u ld event uall y pl ace him across the finish line ahead of everyone with the exception of Correy.
