ROADRACE ~ e Picotte's two for tw o By Paul Carruthers LEXINGTON, OH, AUG. 4 oo k o ut Mr. Polen, you may en d up being th e next Wally Pi pp . Pascal Pico tte has gone two -fortwo while taking your place. With Doug Polen off in Europe winning the Italian round of th e World Championshi p Superbike Series at Misano, Canadian Picotte made like Lou Gehrig and filled in admirab ly for the absent Texan on the Fast By Ferr acci Du cati, win n ing the Pro Twins GPI class at the Mid-Oh io Sports Car Course. If yo u reca ll , Gehrig repl aced an injured Pipp at first base for th e New York Yan kees - and went o n to play in the next 2130 games for the team . Gia Ca Moto team ma tes Pablo Real and series points leader J immy Adamo finished second and third, respectively, with Adamo do ing so as his Ducati V-twin motor started to expire beneath him. AMOL Precision 's Kurt Li ebmann nipped the third Gia Ca Moto pi lo t Warren Elliott for fourth place in the red-flag interrupted race. The G P2 class was won by Fast By Ferracci 's Stephen Mathews over the H ondas of Two Brothers Racing's Robert Meist er and Heshimura Ra cing's Ronald McGill. Adamo still holds th e lead in the cham p io ns hip , a ltho ugh Real closed somewhat with hi s second pl ace fin ish. Adam o leads h is teammate, 69-62 with Elliott a clos e third at 58. Picotte, despite th is being only his second race, moves to sixth in th e series point sta ndings wi th 40 points. Math ews continues to lead Scott William s, eig hth today, in the GP2 standings, 77-65. Meister is third with 51 points. T he race started in similar fashi on to Pi cotte's last American adventure as he battled up from with Adanto as the two pulled clear of the pack. Adamo led Picotte as th e two pulled 15seconds clear of Real by th e fifth lap. On th e eigh th lap, Al Charles crashed his Ducati, bringing out the red £lag. By this tim e, Adam o's Du cat i was co m p lete ly o ut of water a nd was o verheating. The NewYorker filled it up, but kn ew he was go in g to hav e to nurse it to the ' finish in the 1O-lap spri nt race to the flag. Wh en th e red-flag was brought o ut, Meister was leading th e GP2 class over Mathews and McGill. That would change in the second half of the race with Mathews reeling in Meister and beating him to the flag . The seco nd part of the G PI race was a rather dull parade, at least at the front. P icotte charged right off the line, and with Adamo's bike strugglingalong, he wasn't challenged. H e ended up beating Real , who go t by Adamo 's smoking Ducati late in the race, by 15.609 seconds. The race for third overall was a thriller with Li ebmann, Elliott, Matthews (GP2), Meister (G P2), and Peter Kight taking their battle all th e way to the finis h line. ~ L Resu lts G P I: I.
