T he two excha ng ed the lead until H ale finally dove under Payne a t the bo tto m of the downhill to win th e first mo te . T he secon d moro saw Kent Reed leadi ng th e way 'ou t o f the first tu rn. ahead o f H ale a nd Payne. As the to p th ree rid ers came thro ugh the fro nt secti o n of the track, Reed hit a slick spot in a turn and los t both wh eels, spira ling to the grou nd. Payne a nd H al e smoked pas t Reed , wit h Payne grabbing the lead. The two riders then set their o wn pace, pulling a way from the pa ck by ove r 10 seconds. Payne held off H a le for the entire mota with the two rid ers never separated by mor e tha n a bi ke leng th. Payne's 2-1 scor e topped Ha le's 1-2 score to tak e the ove ra ll win . Frank ra n away from the pack, add ing nearly o ne second a lap to his lead. The bigges t ba ttle was for seco nd place, between Am aradio and Ziuerkopf, with Zitte rkopf zapping Amaradio o n lap four at the bottom of the Carlsbad Freeway . Their fight continued until Ial? five, when th e two riders went for th e sa me line going into a turn. Zitt erkop f swapped hard and also shot straightfor th e fence. Zitterkopf cleared the fence and gra zed the telep ho ne pol e o n the ot her side . U nharmed, but unab le to re-enter the track, Zitterkopf rode back to the pits. Amaradio continued to chase Bil1y Frank. but to no avail , as Fran k easil y maintained a seven- seco nd lead. O n th e final lap, Sta ten caug h t and passed Ama rad io to finish seco nd. The second mot o start ed with Amaradio pulling the ho lesho t with nan Ber g, Staten. and Fra nk following. Berg flew by Amaradio o n the downhill and led un til lap three , when Fra nk too k the lead up th e freeway. Frank then promptly pu t three seconds on the rest of the field .
