Smith took the Scra tch ma in wh ile lit erall y locking ho rn s with Pat Reynolds. Smi th got by oil the inside o f turn fou r, but both riders were o ver th e edge o f co ntrol. T he two machines were lock ed toge ther as th ey crossed the fin ish with Smith a wh eel ahea d. Mau er a nd Jeff Tretar a were nearl y as close for thi rd place, as th ey fin ished side by side. Mauer put it all together for a H and icap win over Sm ith , Reynolds, T retara and Curt Cerwinsky. Team H arl ey-Davidson's Chris Carr topped th e Expert cla ss at th e Orrville Regi on al H alf Mi le, held at Buckeye Speedway. Chris Ca rr turned in th e fastest time trial, rounding the co u rse in 20.393 seco nds. Mike Hale was a tick back, at 20.499 a nd a 20.847 by Steve Mo rehead p ut hi m o n th e pole for th e third hea t. Donnie Estep took th e point pos ition in th e last Expert q ualifier with a 20.876. Ca rr used the first Expert hea t to warm up for the ma in . as he rod e o ff to an easy wi n and fas test hea t tim e. Carr's performance earned him th e pole for th e fin al. Rusty Rog ers, Will DaVIS and Bria n T illison were the ente rta in men t in th e fir st heat , as they battled for th e remain ing two transfer spots. Rog ers a nd Davis mad e th e cu t. Mik e H ale too k con tro l of th e seco nd heat from flag-to-flag . Seco nd pl ace fin ish er , Larry Pegram , di d h is bes t to stay clea r of a n inte restin g race for th e fin al transf er. Steve Bea tt ie sto le th e hol esh ot, but th e field wa s a t h is rear fender. Steve Moreh ead , Bren t Armbru ster , Aaron H ill , Bria n H ardin and Du ane Veeder were all ove r the raceway. All of th e ri ders in the pack led at one time o r a not her. With o ne tu rn to go, Moreh ead drove into th e lead wi th Beat tie, Hi ll , Veeder and Hardi n intent o n a repass. In the middle of the tu rn , Hill go t h is front wheel betw een Beanie's exhaus t pipes and rear wh eel a nd th ey both went down . Beattie watched helplessly, as hi s bike bu rst in to flam es. Moreh ead, Veeder and H ardin lTansfered . The last hea' had problems o f its q w n . On the fir st lap , George Roed er and Garth Bro w tr ied to occ u py th e same space in tu rn three and go t of f. Neither made th e restart. Rex Fisher a nd Steve Aselt in e raced for the point po sitio n. Aseltine fou nd a line that wor ked for h im and he dr ove away for th e wi n. David Lloyd turned in a good rid e for th e last tick et to th e main. Steve Mor eh ead, multi~time winner at th e Buckeye Speed way, led th e ra ce to the fir st tu rn a nd a lap aft er th at, Carr found th e line he liked , and took the lead from Mor eh ead a nd dro ve away to a three~second win. Aseltine a nd H a le finished th ird and fourth, respectively. La rry Pegra m kept Will Davi s at bay for the fifth place mo ney.
