Mor e than 60 riders competed in 22 classes
at Ca lifornia Raci ng Clu b-hosted MX racing
a t Desert Empire Fairgrounds.
In th e 80cc class , bro th ers D.J. a nd Brian
Sweany ba uled nos e to nose for the overa ll
lead in bo th motes, Althou gh D.j. was scored
separately as a n Intermediate . it didn 't SLOp
thes e two from banging bars numerous times
as well as havin g to co ntend with Novi ce
Randy Webb.
Ran dy Klassen grabbed th e ho leshot in the
first 500cc moto with Ed Matheny a nd Danny
Re ider ri ght b ehind. Mathen y quickly
slipped pas t Klassen for th e lead , but Klassen
was able to hol d o rr Reider a nd j oh n Connolly
for a lap or two um il they go t by.
The seco nd 500cc mote sa w in credible
racing, as Matheny and Co nno lly wer e neck
and neck at the sta rt un til Conno lly wen t
do wn . T he lead see-sawe d be tween Ma th en y
a nd Reider until bo th went dow n, leaving the
wa y for Ron Lewi s to tak e a co mforta ble lead
and th e eventual mot o win . The ba ttle for
seco nd pla ce a nd o verall win sii ll hadn 't been

Foster rode to two mo re win s after co n tendi ng
with Bru ce jones add Reid er. In the seco nd
mOLD, Foster look a sp ill o ver th e finish line
jump and fo und himself half a lap down. He
dusted himself orr and went o n 10 pi ck off ,
the o ther riders o ne by on e until tak ing the
lead on the last lap.

For the second ti me in the track's four week
existence, Team Ru ssell 's "Flyin'" Mik e '
- Faria won th e Scratch main a t Lake Perris
Speedway.

Earlier in the week , promoter Brian Church
called in Brad Oxley to rebuild th e track. The
first three weeks of the cam pa igil the surface
was populated with hol es. Oxley's work pa id
d ividends as th e track was smooth an d Lhe
racing 100%betler.

up. Gary Hicks, just24 hours afte r dISlocating

went by H icks , but he could not hold the

wide in turn two on the secon d revolution

himself, Lucero was almost a ha lf straight
behind Faria - wh en th e event reached the
halfway point.

After h is thi rd place finish in th e Scratch

He noticed tha t the 22·year-old di d not have
a requ ired chain gua rd o n. Hicks ' crew
quickly pUI o n th e guard and H icks rejo in ed
the field for the start. G ary Ackroyd grabbed
the lead from th e short yard age over .lessee
Fin ch and John Aden. Rob Pfetzing and Do n
adorn passed ' Aden in the first bend. That
p ut them in third and fourth, but adorn slid
out an d fell in tu m three. He remounted, but
,:""S far behind the pack.
Fi nch was all o ver Ackroyd and nearly got
by when Ackroy d parked in turn two. Hicks
dropeed out of th e even t on la p three wh en
his bike qui t. T ha t advanced Bobby Schwartz
to third.
Finch h ung a ll over Ackroyd and wait ed
for a mistake. In turn three o n lap seven , th e
mi stak e came . Ackroyd parked a nd Fin ch tried
to go in side of him. The two came together
a nd Ackroyd caeened into th e cras h wa ll. A
red nag cam e ou t and Fin ch received a pe na lty
for kn ocking Ackroyd dow n.
The ra ce restarted wit h ' th e two lap s left
and Ackroyd in ' th e lead . He looked like he
was go ing to ta ke th e victo ry until th e fin al
bend wh en Sc h wa nz ca m e ca lli ng. T h e
seasoned veteran kept the throule pegged and
he blew insi de Ackroyd for th e lead. A littl e
mor e than a q ua rter lap later, Schwartz bagged
his first ever Lake Pen is win over Ackro yd
and Pletzing.

Andrews aces Silver Creek MX

Larry Andrews capture d th e Pro cla ss win at
Si lver Creek Raceway's first Saturda y nigh t

The Pro class gated with th e 250cc B
entra n ts to kick off the eveni ng's en tertai nment, and for a lm ost th e en tire first lap
Andrews and William Wils on treated th e
crowd to side-by-sid e, bar -banging racing.
Wh en Andrews slid o u t in a tum and lost
two positio ns, W ilso n gained som e breat hing
roo m a nd began to stretc h out seco nds o n th e
rest of th e co mbined field . Andrews was on
the march , though , working his way through
traffic until the o nly tiling between h im self
and Wil son was em p ty track. Andrews moved
in to pressure Wilson at the white nag. The
last lap saw Andrews challenge at every turn
and j um p , wh ile Wilson used every trick he
knew to keep him beh ind. Blazi ng dow n the
fro n t stra ight to the creek sweeper, Wilso n
en tered th e turn a shade too hot a nd drifted
just a bit wide. Andrews ducked inside and
was able to hold first by a length at th e
checkered nag.

Bollinger, a nd Wilson roa red past., As the
seco nd lap began, Wi lso n closed up on the
two fro nt -ru n ners, mak ing it a threesome that
str uggled for advantage until the last lap.
Wi lso n and Bollinger' s tuss le for second place
slo wed. them just a tick, allowing Andrews
to take the checkered first by two seconds.
Becau se Bolli nger rides his o wn track for fun
and is never o f£icially scored, Wilson cam e
away with th e ru n ne r-up spot.

Terry Ware was sq ueezed o ut in the fir st turn
to th e back of the pack, and was forced to
use all his passin g skills to mak e h is wa y to
th e front in order' to ge t a good view of Stewart .
By lap four Ware had Stewa rt in hi s sigh ts
and began to reel him in , but ra n o ut of tim e.

Stewa rt.

McConn exi ted the track with a mech an ical
woe. Givi ng th e Pros a run for th eir money
was Vet Pro, Irv Achzi ger , wh o mixed it u p
with the younger riders. T he six Vet Pros were '
scored separately, bu t were started o n the same
gate. In both motos, Achziger rod e lik e a
youngst er. john Dauth finished second
overall in th e Vet Pro cla ss.
